Let’s face it, online dating sucks. People look for hookups and sex. I just want someone to come home to. Someone whose texts make me blush. Someone whom I can eventually wake up next to. I'm a super cheesy, hopeless romantic person. I give random hugs and forehead kisses. But it’s not something I like doing unless I’m dating that person. However, I am not looking to go super fast or super slow. I want to go just the right speed. I want someone whom I can become a better me with.
Anyway, here's some relevant stuff about me: I grew up in India and moved here for my job. I was brought up with Hindu beliefs, but I'm agnostic now. I respect everyone's beliefs as long as they're not forced on me. You do your thing, I'll do mine. I started going to hikes after moving to Utah, and I love it. Especially if it ends with a waterfall. Outdoors helps me think through stuff. Once this pandemic is over, I'm planning to visit NYC and Hawaii, the top 2 things on my bucket list.
Oooh - I like coffee a lot. I love movies, and I learned my English only from movies. I'm a HUGE fan of horror movies and musicals are probably my least favorite genre (but I will watch it with you). I'm a very organized person and I handle finances well but don't worry if you're not. I can help you, give you tips and tricks, but I won't force you to change anything for me. I respect the concept of personal space. Smoking and drugs are disgusting, and that is a strict no-no for me. There's probably a ton of things I want to write, but I don't want to bore you. If you like it so far, let's talk and get to know each other more!

2020.09.16 13:33 GeekyViews_Team Must Have Kitchen Essentials

Must Have Kitchen Essentials

Must Have Kitchen accessories to make Your Life Whole Lot Easier

Following are the must have Kitchen accessories you need right now .

Buy Best Mandoline Slicer
Nothing streamlines daily cooking prep like a mandoline slicer. You can save time in the kitchen—and achieve precise cuts without needing to learn any knife skills—with the sharp, long-lasting, and replaceable blades of the mandolin slicer . It has a simple, handheld design and a safe, reliable hand guard that keeps your fingers out of harm’s way.
Buy Best Wine Tumbler
Even though bars and restaurants are slowly starting to reopen nationwide, street-side cocktails and boozy to-go drinks have become the new norm. Cut back on single-use plastic by bringing your own reusable wine tumbler to sip that tasty frosé in the park or at the beach, and keep those drinks chilling in style all season long.
Buy Best Wine Aerators
Wine aerators make wine taste and smell better, there are no two ways about it. By encouraging oxidation and evaporation, wine aerators open up a wine’s taste and aroma. $10 bottles of wine taste like $20 bottles, $20 bottles like $40 bottles, and so on.
Buy Best Microwave Food Cover
Microwave food covers are an essential and affordable kitchen accessory. They help food retain moisture as it’s reheated and help ensure that food is warmed evenly. They also reduce messes by preventing dishes like chili from splattering in the microwave. It’s important to choose a high-quality microwave cooking cover that’s durable and made from non-toxic materials. There are dozens of options to choose from.
Buy Best Wine Saver
A wine preservation system is pretty much self-explanatory based on the name alone but there are a lot of them in different forms and how one works is what interests people. Air may be good for wine as it helps in bringing out the wonderful aromas and flavors of the wine, that’s why we decant it for some time. However, too much exposure to air will lead to oxidation and eventual deterioration of the wine flavorwise. To avoid this, several handy wine saver products help in prolonging the wine’s quality so you can enjoy it longer. If you are a wine person then a wine saver is a must have for you .
Buy Best Electric Wine Opener
With so many ways to open a bottle of wine, finding the right wine opener depends on your personal preferences, tastes, and capabilities. “When shopping for new wine openers, I look for functionality, style, and price,” says Tekla Israelson, certified sommelier and New York sales manager for Washington, D.C.’s Republic Restoratives Distillery. “I want something straightforward that is easy to use [and] won't take up a lot of space, but still looks good on my bar cart.” For a wine lover and quick drinker the electric wine opener is a must have thing to keep in his bar cart.
Buy Best Food Scale
A good kitchen scale just might be your secret weapon for consistent cookies, perfectly risen bread, or a lofty souffle. It gets your baking down to a science, offering precision that rivals the best measuring cups and spoons. If you’re looking to lose some good amount of weight and want to keep a track of what you want to eat then a food scale is a must have for you. It’s among the fastest and most accurate scales we tested, and it remains powered on for longer than most others before automatically shutting off.
Buy Best Immersion Blender
Hand blenders, also known as stick or immersion blenders are the most convenient appliances for blending or pureeing ingredients right inside a bowl or even in hot pot on the stove. The main advantage of handheld blenders over food processors – you don’t have to move the ingredients to a different bowl for mixing. They are perfect for pureeing, creaming, blending a drink, mixing, and emulsifying (like mayonnaise). Some high-end immersion blenders also come with additional features like chopping, ice crushing, and mixing dough.
Buy Best Vacuum Sealer Bag for Food
When it comes to preserving your food, the best vacuum sealer bags are almost as important as the machine that seals them. Luckily, once you work your way through your machine's starter pack, the internet has ample replacements. Most of them are affordable and effective, but how do you narrow it down? The first thing you'll want to consider is compatibility. The vast majority of brand-name vacuum sealers make their own replacement bags — but generic brands are usually much more affordable and can work just as well. Before you buy any bags, however, you'll want to check the measurements and compatibility of your machine. (Most full-size machines can seal bags up to 12 inches wide, but double-check anyway.)
Buy Best Coffee Filter Paper
When you’re talking about brewing coffee, opinions tend to be strong. We’re not talking about beans, roast, or even the type of coffee maker - but the coffee filter. And there's a lot to consider when selecting your coffee filter. It might be the last thing you think about when you’re putting a fresh pot on to brew, but coffee filters can make a real difference in how your coffee tastes. Coffee filters don’t just keep the grounds out of your coffee, they can also absorb more or less all of the oils that accompany a particular blend. Coffee oils, which are the source of coffee's bold flavor, are absorbed by paper or cloth filters. More absorption, less flavor.
Buy Best Cutting Board
A good cutting board is a workhorse in any kitchen. Above all, it should be large, providing ample space for carving or chopping, and relatively easy to care for. There are both marble and plastic chopping boards in the market . Both boards feel good under a knife, and they stood up to many sharp cuts, dark stains, and strong odors better than the competition. Plus, after years of long-term testing, neither board has split or egregiously warped from misuse. There are a lot of chopping boards in the market .
Buy Best Hand Mixer
A hand mixer is always a convenient electric handheld mixing option. It works as a blending tool as well and comes with different speeds for adjustment. With ample accessories like a whisk, this is one basic houseware essential that offers a multipurpose solution. This technology is a perfect example of compact design, great functionality and easy to features that make it a user-friendly solution. There are a lot of options for you to choose from in the market .
Buy Best Coffee Maker
If you are as addicted to coffee as me and both aroma and taste matters to you, then you know that a perfect cup of coffee is almost impossible without a good coffee maker. However, gone are the days when the coffee maker used to be a simple affair! Buying a coffee machine is more complicated than ever as you are almost spoilt for choice. Getting confused and utterly dazed is a regular norm here.
Buy Best Espresso Machine
Because we’re all still working from home, grabbing a latte on the way to work seems like a very distant memory. If you muddled through the first few months of quarantine with a crummy coffee maker, perhaps it’s finally time to upgrade to something much better. To help you achieve barista-level drinks, we found a bunch of different espresso machines , as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers. We focused on electric espresso machines for our “best-rated” and “best-rated (less expensive)” picks, but we’ve also included a few well-rated stovetop espresso makers, as well as some Nespresso machines, farther down. And if you’re still looking for something to take your coffee drinks to the next level, we rounded up the best milk frothers and the best drip coffee makers for you, too.
Buy best Clip on Strainer
If you have a small kitchen, you know just how much space a colander can take up. While it’s one of the most useful tools that a home chef could own, it occupies a lot of precious cabinet space since it’s often awkwardly shaped and bulky. However, one tool offers an ingenious solution to this common kitchen woe. There a number of clip-on strainers to choose from in the market .
Buy Best Silicone Baking Molds
For both the serious amateur and the professional pastry chef, the best silicone baking molds make crafting the perfect pastries and cakes easier. Because they’re flexible and easy to clean, these food-grade silicone kitchen implements are indispensable tools both in and out of the oven. They’re heat resistant and safe for continuous use. However, not all products are of equal quality. To help separate the wheat from the chaff, we’ve compiled a list of the top ten products available in the online marketplace. You can shop, purchase, and get back to your happy place in the heat of the kitchen.
Buy Best Coffee Mug Warmer
We all know the importance of that first cup of piping-hot coffee in the morning. From the first few sips of that caffeine-rich elixir, your body warms up and you're ready to face the day. Unfortunately, coffee doesn't stay hot. At some point, you're going to reach for that freshly made java and it'll be lukewarm, for you there is a coffee maker. But things don't have to be that way! Arm yourself in the fight against cold, stagnant coffee by investing in an electric mug warmer. To make your shopping journey easier, we've rounded up these top-rated mug warmers to keep your java toasty all season long. There are a lot of coffee mug warmers for you to choose from and there are a lot of advantages of using a coffee mug warmer and even a coffee mug warmer plate , and you can choose from the best coffee mug warmer for yourself.
Buy Best Milk Frother
Perfectly frothed milk makes espresso-based drinks, like lattes and cappuccinos, delightful. But that's also what makes most models cost a pretty penny. Luckily, there are affordable and easy to use milk frothers you can buy for home use, including handheld ones that simply whisk air into the milk, automatic frothers that heat and froth milk with a push of a button, and steam wands that come attached to latte machines.
Buy Best Electric Skillet
Owning the best electric skillet can be a huge advantage in many different situations. The main situation you may come across when needing an electric skillet is when you don’t have a stove inside your home or the means to build a fire. Sure, you could use an electric grill for some dishes, but even then, an electric skillet is a more versatile tool. An electric skillet will come in handy if you live in a small family. Many college dorms also do not have a stove or the ability to use anything but electricity which is where such a skillet will come in handy. An electric skillet will also use less electricity compared to using a skillet or a sauté pan on an electric or gas stove as well. So, it is safe to say that these kitchen tools are very energy-efficient. They will usually heat up faster than any other pan on the stove and are usually very easy to maintain and control the heat and temperature. Overall, electric skillets will work for just about any job or task in the kitchen. There are nonstick electric skillets as well as ceramic electric skillets.
Buy Best Mixing Bowls
From the professional chef to the casual cook, you will need the best mixing bowl. To whip up and to mix ingredients for cooking, this is of utmost importance. Whether you prefer the clean look that stainless steel gives you, the versatility, and stability of glass, or the extra volume that copper brings to beaten eggs, there are a number of mixing bowls in the market.
Buy Best Oven Mitts
Oven mitts fall under the category of kitchen products that are entirely unsexy but utterly essential. Sure, they don’t have the wow factor of a sleek stand mixer, but oven mitts perform an arguably more important function: Protecting your hands from painful burns.
Buy Best Tumblers
Let’s face it, mornings are hard, and going to work without a cup of tea or coffee is even harder. Sometimes though, there just isn’t enough time to fit in that one step in your morning routine. Or at least that’s what it seems like, but there is a way. All you need in your life is a good tumbler you can take with you on your way to work.
Buy Best Kitchen Towels
Let’s face it, we’re all a little bit of a mess in our own way, especially in the kitchen, which is why you can never have too many kitchen towels. Having a thick stack on hand will ensure you’re always ready to sop up messes, wipe down counters, and dry hands, dishes, and produce. We’ve wiped up gallons of spills and dried countless dishes with 25 towels since 2014. They’re absorbent, durable, affordable, and available in a rainbow of colors.
Buy Best Trivets
The one item that you never think of but always need is a trivet. They protect your tables and countertops from heat damage from those great cast irons and bakeware that you need a spot for when you whip it out of the oven. Hot plates, pots and pans always need a space to go especially when the stovetop is occupied, and a good trivet stand is a good idea. When the kitchen is overwhelmed during holidays like Thanksgiving or Easter, you'll need a spot to put the goods.
Buy Best Electric Pressure Cooker
Pressure Cookers are one of the most essential items in the Indian Kitchen. You need them for making Lentil Soup, Curries and almost everything. You can also make amazing idli and cakes with the help of pressure cookers but do you know that there are electrical pressure cookers available in India as well? They had been quite popular in the west but they were not as popular in India until the last few years. Presently, they have gained a lot of popularity and what sets them apart is their efficiency. That is right, electrical pressure cookers for chicken are much more efficient than the regular pressure cookers. A lot of people are confused and they doubt if they really need the pressure cooker but the fact is that there are many advantages and a complete guide for the beginners. Most importantly, they can cut your cooking time to just 30% of what you would need earliest.
Buy Best Paper Towels
When it’s time to clean up a mess around the house, the right paper towel goes a long way. But with an entire aisle of choices in every store, which paper towel offers the best cleaning ability for the money? After days spent researching and testing all of the best paper towels on the market, our favorite product is the original paper towel because of its ease of use, soft texture, great value, and unparalleled cleaning ability. However, there were many excellent products we found in our testing.
Buy Best Measuring Cups
Measuring cups for Dry ingredients and liquid ingredients help us to mainly measure those ingredients which are in a large quantity and cannot be easily done with measuring spoons such as flour, liquid ingredients like milk and water. They cannot be quickly done with measuring spoons. There are cups for measuring medicines as well. Choose the best from many options.
Buy Best Silicone Baking Mat
If the only thing standing between you and a home-baked meal is your disdain for messy baking sheets, you’re not alone. The easiest solution? Add a silicone baking mat to your arsenal of kitchen accessories. Made from sustainable, food-grade, non-stick silicone, these baking mats eliminate the need for cooking sprays, parchment paper, aluminum foil and any post-baking clean up. If you’ve ever spent more time scrubbing burnt food and oil off a baking tray than you spent baking in the first place, you’ll be amazed by how vastly a silicone baking mat changes the game.
Buy Best Hanging Trash Can
Let’s talk trash. Taking it out is never fun, but a good receptacle can make the task less of a slog. We’ve tested more than 20 kitchen trash cans since 2014. It makes tossing garbage easy, replacing bags painless, and cleaning a cinch.
Buy Best Fish Scale Remover
If you enjoy eating freshly caught fish, you already know how irritating and annoying it can be to pick scales from your fish while eating. You can enjoy unhindered consumption of fish if you can remove the scales, and for this purpose, you will need a tool called a fish scaler. So, you never have to worry about spending time or elbow grease trying to remove the scales. While there are many different types of fish scalers.

(Have you dared to look inside your Tupperware cabinet lately? Exactly.) Thankfully, that's where these super-smart kitchen drawers and cabinet organizers come in. Each of these genius solutions is designed to solve a specific kitchen storage problem, ranging from tangled cords to piled-high pans, so you can focus less on finding a spot for your pots, pans, and produce, and more on actually enjoying delicious meals with your family. There are a lot of kitchen drawers at an affordable price.
Buy Best kitchen Knives
Ask any professional chef if they were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one kitchen tool, and they'd probably pick a chef's knife. While other kitchen knives, like serrated knives and paring knives, have more individualized uses, a good chef's knife can do it all, from slicing and dicing to more complicated tasks, like carving a chicken and cutting a pineapple.
Buy Best Dinner set
A good dinner set can take your cooking one step ahead. Good food when served on a good plate automatically catches the eye of the one sitting at the dining table. Whether you are hosting a family get-together or a simple dinner date, a complete dinner set is a must for every household. However, it is a wrong notion to assume that fine dinner sets and dinnerware come at a great price. They can be made of bone china or porcelain; the most expensive ones with great elegance and sophisticated designs. Or stainless steel and melamine that are sturdy, cheap, and affordable. They can also vary hugely in terms of quality and design as they vary in price and maintenance. Once you get the hang of what your requirements are, it is easier to decide upon an elegant dinner set that impresses your family and gives the pleasure of having dinner together.
Buy Best Kitchen Utensils
The kitchen is where your day begins and ends. It’s the place where food is cooked. It’s the place where you hang out. There is no day you fail to enter your kitchen. Your overall health depends on your kitchen. You are attracted towards your kitchen even if you have no reason. It might have happened many times that you go to the kitchen, open the refrigerator then close right back. Calling your kitchen the heart of your home is not an overstatement. Kitchen items are the most essential part of your kitchen. The more type of kitchen items and utensils you have in , the better your kitchen would be.
Buy Best Kitchen Container set
Usually, dry foods come in paper or plastic bags that, once you open them up, spill all over your kitchen cupboards or rice and grains on the pantry shelves. This is where the kitchen container set can come in part. kitchen containers help you to organize the cupboards, save space, keep food fresh, and prevent food from spilling everywhere. But what should you look for in the kitchen container? One of the biggest factors is the material. Whether you choose plastic, acrylic, glass, or another style, be sure that it’s effective and long-lasting. The containers will get lots of wear in your cabinet, so having something well-built will help them last a long time. Another thing to assess is the closure system. There are a lot of different ways lids can close, from a sealing lid to a latching canister to a push-button closure. Their leak-proof covers keep food fresh and contained — and they’re safe to put in the microwave, oven, or freezer. Plus, they’re made with glass and plastic. These are perfect for leftovers or lunch on-the-go. There are many affordable kitchen container sets in the market.
Buy Best Kitchen set
Thanks to the pandemic, there’s a good chance you’re cooking way more than you ever have, and after six months of heavy-use, it’s probably time to update your pots and pans. We’ve written about the best kitchen gear before — including the best toasters and toaster ovens, the best frying pans and skillets, and even asked chefs about their favorite pots and pans. There are a lot of kitchen sets in the market .
Buy Best Kitchen Organizer
As much as we’re fans of a well-organized kitchen, it’s no fun to cook in cluttered chaos of spatulas, stock pots, and stray spice jars. To make the most of (and in) our space, we need to be organized — and the best way to straighten up our cabinets, countertops, and fridge shelves is with the help of smart storage solutions. From spice racks and turntables to airtight containers, there are hundreds and hundreds of tools to keep everything in order. And to help you find the best kitchen organizers for your needs.
Buy Best Kitchen Mats
If you spend a lot of time standing in your kitchen, in front of a standing desk, or really anywhere else, it’s time to make an upgrade to an anti-fatigue mat. The best anti-fatigue kitchen mats go beyond those labeled “anti-slip” or “cushioned” to actually encourage subtle movements in the legs and calf muscles to help promote blood flow. They have even been scientifically shown to help reduce the stress on the body that can come from standing for long periods of time, especially if you already have back, foot, or knee problems.

If you have answered “no” to many of the above questions, then it is time to reconsider your website designing and make it more optimizing.
By only concentrating on design and content will not make your website successful. It must have a design that is compatible with the user experience, functionality, and the one that complements your content. Your website must easily convey to your audience what you do and for who you do it. Knowing how great you are as a business can make you forget to address the core concerns your audience has initially.
So here are some of the tips the best design studios in India can implement to ensure you are going into the correct direction in redesigning.

  1. Implement a plan
Designing a website needs a plan to start with. You will have to structure out the journey of your buyer to make sure your website is meeting the needs of the visitors effectively. You must first figure out which pages they are going to visit, what they are going to read, and the offers that they will get converted to. If you understand this it will help you design a site that will make your leads go through the sales funnel.
2. Removing certain unwanted elements
Sometimes, your website may have certain elements that will deviate your audience from the value and message you are trying to convey. Those unwanted elements may be complicated animations, long content, and stocky web images to list a few. With your website having only seconds to grab the attention of the audience, it will have to create an impression that comes directly to the main point. The best UX agency in Mumbai must do it very carefully by avoiding the use of content or words that are considered outdated. So, ensure that you make your content more appealing.
3. Include follow buttons and social share
You must provide your users with the opportunity to share your content. If your website does not have a social share button, then you could miss out on a lot of traffic from social media. Best UI/UX agencies in India implement these social buttons that will encourage social sharing from the buyer’s persona.
4. Mobile optimization
Nowadays, users mostly use smartphones to access the internet. There are many users that depend solely on a smartphone for internet surfing or shopping. Therefore, the best design studios in India optimize your website for mobile users. You must tailor your site to fit the needs and wants of your visitors.
5. Always focus on testing
Evaluating the conversion paths on where the users are clicking and how far they are scrolling, are some of the essential qualities that can reveal if your pages are performing the way you intend to. When a website has many pages, this issue may be on a lot of pages, especially on older landing pages. These pages perform well but have outdated information that needs to be updated by the best design studios in India. Other pages might only require simple changes that can make an incredible difference to the performance of the page.
Bottom Line
For improving your website’s performance, if the UX agencies implement the above-mentioned tips they can make your website performance excel are various levels. Best design studios in India like Sudha Solutions provides their client with satisfying results by always ensuring the website is up to date and has interesting content. 2020.09.14 11:21 visualcv1 HIGHLIGHT YOUR SKILLS IN YOUR RESUME

Increase effectiveness of resume by highlighting important details
Preparing for a professional life will involve the first step of creating a professional level resume before applying to any job, be it campus placements, or from online job portals, a resume is required at all times. When applying to companies via job search sites in India, you are required to upload a version of your resume into their database and it is this tool that helps you get the job alerts and notifications to matches with relevant job openings. What helps to make a difference is a professional, concise and well-crafted cover letter that introduces you are a person, while the resume will cover the skills part of your profile.
It helps formulate a good first impression, and will draw the attention of the recruiter to why they need to hire you – so a cover letter serves as a personal introduction in a few words about your intentions with the post at hand and giving them a glimpse at why you would be ideal for this job, so it helps as much as the resume in this case. A proper cover letter alerts them to why you should be chosen for this particular job, and advances your application, making it a lot more memorable.

Tips to draw attention to your skills
Use a Cover Letter:
A cover letter will enhance your resume’s quality - it should be clear and to the point - brief with a friendly and professional tone. The main purpose of cover letters is usually to help in directing your resume to the exact place. The information which you are providing should be accurate and should act as an introduction to your resume. The recruiter will be looking at several hundreds of profiles - make yours stand out with an introduction and with a first and right impression.

A cover letter is a quick way for you to summarize who you are, what position you are applying for and what skills and knowledge you have.
Basically a cover letter exists to introduce information that is not on your resume, rather than repeat what already on your resume. This is the common error that most candidate fail to correct and why their resume ends being less memorable. This just goes to double up the same information, and they are missing out on a good opportunity to showcase to their potential employer their other skills and outside experiences which may not be written in the resume, but are pertinent to the job position.
Use a Resume Summary
It is advised to target the particular job opening and company using keywords from the job description. This is useful when you want to show to the recruiter that you are perfect for the job at hand due to your requisite skills.
What needs to be addressed in your summary?
✔ Address the concerned person in the greeting. It is better than simply writing “to whom it may concern.”
✔ Begin with a personal note on why that job interests you.
✔ Highlight those skills that are relevant to the post, with an emphasis on why you would be the perfect fit for the position.
✔ Mention any certifications that go along with the position.
✔ Talk briefly in general about how you are a team player and mention some soft skills – like attention to detail, readiness to take challenges, task-oriented behaviours etc.
✔ Finally include your contact information clearly. Don’t forget to sign, in case of hard copy.
What does a Visual Resume need to convey?
The main features of aVisual Resume is to convey to your potential employers that you are ready for any challenge and you have the confidence – so use the appropriate phrases in your cover letter to show this.
Use phrases that will try to highlight that you are adaptable to most working conditions that you will encounter.
Your Visual Resume should certainly contain small references (very briefly) highlighting your achievements in your previous last role.
A professionally well crafted cover letter with demonstrate to the employers that you are not blindly applying but have read and understood their requirement and applied your own skill set to it, thus showing your keen interest in being selected for the concerned post.
It demonstrates that you have conducted research into the job roles and that you are keen and interested in being a part of this company, as well as the job.
It indicates a passion for what the company does, which is what will set you apart from other candidates.
How to write a Resume
Build your resume with your work experience, skills and certifications and educational qualifications. Update your resume frequently if you have undertaken any add-on courses. Frame your resume in the chronological order and convey your skills effectively.
Order of your resume:
Your contact details
Include your name, phone number and email address.
Career objective
Two or three lines about your talent which you can relate to the job role.
Your key skills
Mention your skills and strengths you have gained through education and experience.
Any technical qualification
Make a list of certifications that you have attained.
Overview of your career path
Include your work details like your company’s name, your designation and the duration worked in that organisation.
Educational qualifications
Mention your educational details and show your highest level of education and add your academic achievements
History of yourself – personal details
This is the point where you have to present your employability skills and list out your personal attributes like honesty, punctuality, strength and weaknesses, trustworthiness and many such
Reference contacts
List out two references of your colleagues you have worked with and mention their name, designation, company and the contact details
Tailor your resume with the right keywords that match the job role of the organisation. The application may get rejected when the resume has not enough keywords. Add those relevant keywords and phrases in your resume and get linked to your desired job.
There is no need to mention your birth date, personal address, gender, caste, religion etc, these are details not connected to the job. No recruiter will select you based merely on your personal details. Avoid typos and errors and make it more professional with the right words. Never mention any false information in your resume as there will be thorough background checks. Before finalizing your resume, share it with your friends and get their review.
Frame your resume in the right manner and land your dream job, with the use of a smart cover letter. Use professional resume writing services like what we offer here to get the best format and see your success rise to its heights.

2020.09.14 04:34 RedBananaBeefHat WKUK Brainstorm MENU

WKUK Brainstorm MENU

Hello, Fellow WKUK Fans.
I’m also a fellow WKUK fan, both of their older and current works; from YouTube, Twitch, and the hype of their new projects. I thought I would create this “MENU” for the WKUK group, so they could use these fan-made ideas for brainstorming:

      • ie: what happened on SEPTEMBER 13 throughout history.
      • Trevor takes a guess first, based on the History Lesson. Then Zach tells the news
      • Going to your FIELD-FAN JOURNALISTS.
      • IF THROUGHOUT - ie, Trevor is still guessing - FIELD-FANS cannot give away anything, only clues.
    • END OF EACH EPISODE: Trevor & Zach write down what they learned - or just take the NewsBoys episode - and put it in the "NewsBoys Time Capsule".
      • Where Aliens and/or the Nuclear Apocalypse future can find it and "learn".
    • Weekly Recommendations:
      • Books, movies, shows, anything, misc, & etc.
      • Theme related
      • Fant Art Challenge
    • WKUK are the “therapists”, and CHAT is the “patient”.
    • Then switch.
    • A community, loving the warmth from classics movies.
    • Date Movie, Epic Movie, Scary Movie 3, Disaster Movie, Munchie.
      • 24/7. No sound, just paint drying.
      • Just sit back and watch the money come in.
      • like "Paint Drying", but this is a pile of money.
      • With every Twitch Donation, you get to witness the physical pile grow, until the movie is ready to be made.
    • Explore random parts of the world, with Google Earth: Street View.
    • Read News Websites from other countries, like India or Chad.
    • Group Breathing Activity.
    • Every day seems to be a holiday, so celebrate
      • For writers, living in a big city, renting an apartment, jacking off, the usual survivor guide stuff.

    • Become Professors
    • Do the bucket lists of people throughout history, who couldn’t finish their bucket-list.
      • ...perhaps, bring a cardboard cutout, or a printed t-shirt, of the person(s), then “release” their spirit.
      • ...becoming next Ghost Busters/Hunters?

    • Scenes From a Hat, Movie Dubbing,
    • Setup blind dates for Sam & Timmy.
    • I’m sure, other fans would know a whole lot of great games for Twitch.
    • Like “24 HOUR TREV-A-THON” / “The Trevor Moore Show”
    • Read “Rule 34” stories, but make them PG….for all the Pips out there.
    • The WKUK gets the same script, but they have to make it separately.
    • Sam explains topics, that the Common Man doesn’t understand.
    • ie: Agrophysics, Bacteriophage, Carnitine, Diode, Etcetera
      • ie: talking to a stranger, flirting, first dates, bars vs clubs, sex.
      • When the novel is finished, sell it like a proper book
    • Using the Cali. Fires as a fireplace, and reading the screenplay of, “Miss March”
    • Edging away from the fire, when needed
    • Personality Tests, Religious/Cult Tests, Hogwarts Test.,

  • ….schedule?
    • As of now [Sep 13, 2020] this is what I’m getting:
      • MON ?:
      • TUE: “D&D” Adventures
      • WED: ?
      • THUR: ?
      • SUN: SELF-SUCK
    • WKUK Reactions (YouTube)
    • Timmy Twitch
    • Sam Twitch
      • [idea: Sam Draws Sundays]
    • Just do something about this “Alphabet Thing”. Change it up..

    • Crappy as Possible, Homemade, Make Up A Country.
    • ie: collect some rocks outside, “bless them”, then sell online for a thousand dollars each.
    • ie: (if not a crime), collect ashes from the Cali. Fires, and sell them as relics to the rich.
    • Luxury items, but they are microscopic.
    • ...or Quantium, so if the Customer ever tries to sees it; the luxury item(s) "scientifically-ish" changes states of reality.
    • Like, "NAME A STAR", but this is a plate of dog food or something, and you get to name little sections of this pile of crap.
    • From the atoms, chemicals, bacteria.
    • Like 5-Hour Energy, but only tap water...guess, a dimebag works too.
    • Add one little drop gold or food coloring and call it: “Golden Showers”, “Golwers”, “Droppers” or “Doccia Dorata” for Italian.
    • Add one little drop of vitamins and call it: “Eden” or some shit.

2020.09.07 04:38 500scnds [Table] My name is Paolo Cattaneo. 5 years ago I quit my job, sold everything I had and embarked in a trip around the world on a motorcycle. Rode for almost 185000 km. Still going! Here to answer question about self sustained living on the road and long distance solo travelling. AmA! (pt 1)

Questions Answers
How much does this lifestyle cost you on average? Obviously it will vary by location Since the most asked question will be probably this one, I decided to break it down mathematically so, hopefully, it would be more transparent for everybody.
I don't think I could summarize with an average how much I spent per month, since the delta from month to month was absolutely unpredictable. But somehow everybody seems to love maths so... There you go.
A couple of things first: 1) different countries have different cost for food, accommodation, fuel and spare parts so to make an average, it s actually quite hard. For instance, a country like Peru cannot be compared in terms of costs with a country like the Netherlands in all terms. 2) when I travel, I am not on vacation. Just because I visit places and don't work, doesn't mean I can afford things like people that go on vacation for 2 weeks. People on holidays usually maintain the same level of comfort they have at home, or even improve it, righteously spoiling themselves, for the few days they have off in a year. I do the exact opposite. I spoil myself by not having to go to work.
Hence, there are 3 major costs in travelling on a motorcycles are: 1) fuel and bike parts (tyres, oil, filters, etc) 2) accommodation 3) food
These are also in order of importance. Fuel and bike maintenance guarantees the continuity of the journey so, those have the absolute priority. Where I sleep or what I eat, do not matter much. I will survive whatever I eat and wherever I sleep. It's incredible what our body can do end endure.
After a year of travelling I found out that, because my life and routine changed completely, I didn't need 3 meals a day anymore. Removing 1 meal a day allowed me to save a lot of money in the long run. It is a sacrifice but it is doable and It is super practical. I also found fasting good for the mind.
Sleeping arrangements could also affect greatly on your expenditures so, depending on countries and weather conditions, I usually opt to sleep in my tent or in hostels. Sometimes I do couchsurfing or stay at other motorcyclists houses, friends, friends of friends, etc. I ve also slept at complete strangers houses that i met on the road and that were reaching out simply to help. It s unbelievable how many people, just want to give you a hand. It s impossible to explain it. You have to see it yourself to believe it.
The cheap hostel in Peru would cost $5-6 a night, while in the USA $25.
In this sense, I estimated an average of 10 USD a night for accommodation for and average of 20 days per month. Again, It is a rough estimate. Let s say the other 10 days I sleep at people's houses, or in my tent or couchsurfing (so at no cost). Foodwise I usually drink a coffee (I carry my own little Italian coffee machine) in the am, with a piece of bread or instant oatmeal. Then I ride the whole day and reach my destination at 4-5 pm. I then eat. I mostly eat vegetarian but i occasionally have meat. I mostly shop at cheap supermarkets or local markets. Vegetables are cheap and nutritious and available all over the world. And so is pasta and rice. This whole thing costs me let s say 10 USD a day.
So for Food and Accommodation I roughly spend 500 USD. Then there's fuel. Fuel costs can vary from country to country but, for the sake of it, let s put fuel price at 1.2 USD a liter (4.5 USD a gallon). My bike in standard riding conditions does 20km per liter of fuel. In 5 years I rode 180000 km. That's 36000 a year. That s 3000 a month. So 3000/20 = 150 liters. 150 x 1.2 = 180 USD
The grand total is 500+180= 680USD per month Let s put 100 USD in for extras and whatever. It's 780 USD a month, if you will. But trust me when I say that I think I spend less than that.
There you go.
the below is a reply to the above
What is your coffee maker? Moka pot i'm guessing? I have a little Bialetti coffee machine, yes. :)
the below is a reply to the above
Yeah, that confirms you are really Italian. So is my SO, and when we are traveling, she will start complaining about the bad coffee by the time we get to the airport 😄 I am Italian...but I'm also passed that point of complaining about food all the time! I learned to enjoy my meal...regardless. :)
another coffee reply
Any tips for the Bialetti? A neighbor gave me one and I used it with Café Bustelo and it was crazy stong, albeit not too bad. Use less coffee ground! 😅
the below is another reply to the original answer
If you saved 40k, are you down to very little money now? I'm just thinking it's been 5 years, and I imagine you've had some unexpected expenses that would have your average end up being relatively accurate on aggregate, even if you typically spend less in a month. At $700 per month, you would be out of money. And even just the plane tickets from Australia to starting point and from somewhere to Greece where you say you were during Covid is a couple months of your budget I'd imagine. Yes, i had some unforeseen expenses. But luckily I also had a lot of help from people giving me shelter and food. In that sense I didn't spend all my money in food and accommodation but for the sake of average expenses I had to calculate it that way. In greece i found a job as volunteer in exchange of accommodation. That saved me 3 months of rent. Things like this cannot be included in average. I simply did the math to make people understand how much would it cost if life on the road would be without variables. There are too many to be considered.
the below is another reply to the original answer
Even if it's only 600 at month, you have been riding around for how long? It seems hard to think you saved so much and you are still using the money you saved. Is anyone helping you financially? I swear...i am using my money. 😅👍 It s hard to imagine how cheap it is to live frugally...if you renounce to most comforts we have in life. But I wouldn't mind now to have a benefactor(s) and sleep in a comfy bed or have a nice meal for a change.
Does it not worry you how you might have exhausted your financial resources by the time you want to return? What do you think life after this would be like? I hope I don't sound rude; just trying to understand how you are managing your life. What you are doing is absolutely amazing; I'd love to travel too but I am not rich either, and the thought of ending up penniless by the time I am 30 terrifies me. Hey, it's a completely plausible question and I am happy to answer that. Quitting your job, your financial stability, selling everything you have, saying goodbye to everybody and ride is a "liberating" experience. In this sense, all the fears you mentioned are gone or somehow abandoned, the moment you decide to go for it! I have no fear of what lies in front of me because the mental step that I took years ago, required me to go beyond exactly this mental gap of "jumping into the unknown". Financially speaking, yeah, i don't like to have no money aside...but also, I know that I will do something about it (like finding a new stimulating gig) when the time comes. When I found myself locked in Greece during the pandemic, I couldn't really foresee what would have happened in the next months. Surely paying rent for months and being confined in an apartment wasn't ideal so I looked for volunteering jobs. Found one that allowed me to stay in an apartment for free in exchange of 3 hours of work per day. My point is that, adaptation is a key skill that I got to develop thanks to this experience on a motorcycle. I will take care of the my retirement plan, when time comes.
the below is a reply to the above
Thanks for the answer. That's a wonderful perspective. I guess your anxiety lessens once you realize how capable you are of adapting to different situations, which I'm sure you must have had to do a bunch of times since you started. You are amazing, thanks for the inspiration :) It's incredible how inclined we are to adapt, If we simply...TRY ! I never thought I would be able to do a lot of things I am doing today. I just gave it a try...failed...and tried again. I did learn, by simply trying. And I'm clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed.
the below is another reply to the original answer
I feel like you cloud start vlogging your journeys, and form a Patreon to fund it. You've seen lots of fun things, and will see more. Yes. At the beginnings I started blogging but then I realized that it would have turned my trip into a job i left the monetization of my journey aside. I just quit my job to travel and enjoy my life. Didn't want to think about money again! Patreon seem good but I haven't really found the guts to ask money to people...yet. When I ll be in need maybe i will!
the below is another reply to the original answer
In no way am I trying to attack you or diminish your extraordinary feat; just the fact that you had the courage to take the first step gives me crazy respect for you. BUT. There is so much privilege needed to get to where you have gotten. Not financial privilege mind you, you've worked your arse off to get here. But the fact that you could somehow travel to and stay in the US (for 3 years!) and then Australia without really thinking twice tells me your white skin and European passport has played a huge role in your mental safety net. As a coloured man with a shitty passport, just getting a visa to fly somewhere would be a huge fucking deal. Add to that the racism I'd face in plenty of places around the world, yeah not happening haha. You are absolutely right, my friend. I do understand that the fact that I am white and that I have an EU passport helped me A LOT. I am absolutely aware of this and I am not so naive to think that most of the times I got away with many things because of this. Coming from other countries or being a different colour could unfortunately still play a role, these days, when moving from country to country. Said this, I got denied my entrance to USA few times anyway. They are quite strict in that sense. But it always depends on the customs officer you find at the time of entry. Anyway. I get your point. Although, it's not a definite factor for your will to travel. You can still do it.
the below is another reply to the original answer
I love everything you're doing and have spent the last hour just reading your answers. I don't think you're answering anymore but... Do you have any plans of coming to India? I hope I get to meet you if you do come. Hey! Of course i have plans for India! Hopefully the covid will end soon! It all depends on that now
the below is another reply to the original answer
You can write blogs, and make YouTube videos to sustain your adventures! I am sure many of us would like to see your journey. I got few videos on youtube but i never really invested too much time (clearly) in that. Maybe I should
I always hear about people "giving up everything" and traveling the world. However, most people have worries about their economic status. Can you speak to yours at the point when you embarked? How much money had you saved, did you have any debt, what did you do with your belongings (Were there things you stored somewhere because you did want to sell or get rid of them? Did you pay for storage?), did you create a plan to generate additional income (e.g., plans for side jobs while traveling), and have you thought how to re-integrate into the "working world" when your traveling concludes (or are you hoping YouTube, etc. supports you)? Thanks! So, I started saving money when I moved to Australia. In 5 years I rounded up $40k more or less. I had no debts and, regardless the bank offering me "super interesting" offers about Credit Cards or Mortgages to buy properties, I didn't end up getting in debts with any banks. I also avoided kids and wives. I was renting an apartment and sharing it with a friend. When I decided to leave I sold all my furnitures on Gumtree (local Craigslist) and donated all my clothes to Salvation Army (Goodwill). I had no belongings left except what I piled on the bike when I left. And few months in I also realized that I didn't even need some stuff that I brought along. I did quit my job with no plans to work while travelling. I wanted, for the first time in my life, have a moment to simply ENJOY THE MOMENT without thinking about work and life as I knew it. I wanted to experience freedom, without the burden of thinking about my future constantly and what's going to happen next. I was raised with this mental construct too, so to break free from that was indeed liberating. I do not know how is going to be when this part of my life ends. If I have to go back to work, I will. But with a different heart and mind.
How did you manage it, physically? I find that my legs, back, bottom and body ache after just a few hours of riding (3+ hours), and this gets worse and worse over time (6+ hours, etc). Even on a comfortable touring motorcycle, I can’t imagine riding continuously for weeks or months at a time. Yes. Physically was challenging indeed. I had to replace my seat because the was no more foam inside. It was like sitting on a stool. Back and arse are the worst affected areas. I rode with a bit of a windscreen, so that helped to ease some of the neck pain. Luckily I had some physical conditioning to start with, but eventually I got out of shape. But, like everything in life, we eventually get used to it.
the below is a reply to the above
How many hours do you ride a day? It really depends. When I do ride, let's say that is a minimum of 1 and a half to 13 hours.
Could you maybe do a "what's in my bag"-post, show us the gear, tools and clothing you use and talk a bit about why you chose what? Ok.
Pannier 1 Camping Gear: - Sleeping bag - Air mattress - 3 people tent (I'm a tall guy) - $20 cooking pot set - propane gas tank - pocket knife - foldable chair - water bladder
Pannier 2 Electronics and knick knacks: - 11" laptop - 2 hard drives (backup!!!) - Chargers - portable tyre compressor - spare oil filter - spare front tube - cable ties - duct tape - bungee cords - first aid kit - spare bolts and screws
Tool bag - various moto tools
Duffle bag: - Clothes (various)
Tank Bag: - Drone - Toothbrush - Notepad - Small Lock - Pen
the below is a reply to the above
Did you have any problems with the drone? I remember you told me once on instagram that you planned on visiting Azerbaijan but couldn’t because Azerbaijan closed all the borders. Let me warn you that if you decide to come when borders reopen, know that drones are illegal here. Retarded law I know but you really cannot do anything about it because it is highly enforced. Probably you can give it up in customs and pick it up when you leave Nicaragua is the same. They don't allow drones in their country. I had to send it to costa rica via mail.
the below is another reply to the original answer
Traveling without a Leatherman. I can't believe it. It s listed. "Pocked knife" ;) You are right...i should have said Leatherman
the below is another reply to the original answer
What drone do you have? DJI mavic Air.
the below is another reply to the original answer
I have a CB600F I've fitted panniers to and can't fathom how you got all that camping stuff into one pannier, your packing skills must be sick I got some pretty roomy panniers too. Giant Loop is actually a company from Oregon, USA that makes these spectacular bags. I ve been riding with their products for years now.
Well nobody has asked it yet.. How did you self sustain yourself for so long? I understand everything is cheaper in South America but you also went through North America. In north America, specifically in USA, I had some friends that helped me finding accommodation along the way. I also wild camped a lot. Froze my arse up couple of nights too... But It's doable in Canada and USA since the land is so vast and you can always find a place to pitch your tent in safety.
the below is a reply to the above
See my trouble always begins when I pitch a tent I used to be the same, mate!
the below is another reply to the original answer
Maybe I'm just jaded but I don't know of anywhere you can just pitch a tent and sleep in the woods. Everywhere I've ever been camping there's an 80 dollar fee and you get a designated campground. Download iOverlander.
Hi, sorry if this is a personal question, but how often did you get laid? Do cultural differences play a role? Personal question, but interesting nonetheless. Thanks for asking "sensibly".
When travelling from town to town it's easy to meet people. The common Idea is that travellers get laid a lot. Unfortunately, in my case, I do not go out much when I travel, so my social encounters are limited to the location where I end up spending the night. I also typically stay not longer than a day or two, which is also usually not enough to create a connection with a potential partner (in my case). A lot of women are indeed attracted by the "solitary wolf" riding a motorcycle around the world, but they are not generally inclined to have a one night experience. Hence, the answer to your question, is that I rarely get laid. Cultural differences are what make mating interesting though. One trait that is standard for your part of the world, could be extremely exotic in another. Sometimes even the accent in which you speak a foreign language, could be a favourable factor.
But at the end, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
the below is a reply to the above
Dai ammettilo che l'accento italiano aiuta. Storia interessante la tua. Ti auguro il meglio! Sorry guys.. Italian things going on here ( shakes hands in the air ) Un pochino aiuta! ;) cheers!
How did you deal with language barriers? In all latin america the most spoken language is Spanish. I struggled at the beginning but after the first month, I had a decent basic level that allowed me to communicate quite easily with the locals. In Brazil was hard again, since portuguese was completely new for me. But again, after 1 month I got used to it and I was able to have basic conversations. If you give yourself enough time, you'll pick up any language.
In other situations I used my english or sometimes, like recently in Greece, Google Translate. Works beautifully!
Is it true that Italian and Spanish go hand in hand? I had some friends from Mexico who were confident that they could pick up Italian if they lived in Italy and were forced to use it every day for a month or 2. There are different and discordant opinions about this. I personally believe that Italian and Spanish are VEEEEERY similar. I think that any spanish speaker could easily pick on italian if spending some time in the country. And viceversa. But I also met people that thought otherwise. Not sure why. It wasn't too complex for me to pick up spanish. Definitely not perfect, but way better than a native english speaker.
What was the coolest thing you saw? Hard to pinpoint one single thing. Saw so many incredible things in 5 years! Nature always strucks me the most. Some places leave you speechless. Some encounters too. But the coolest experience for me was to swim with marine wildlife in Australia and Ecuador.
the below is a reply to the above
Hey I from Ecuador! Glad you enjoyed the wildlife. Can you elaborate on your experience there? Did you visit the Galapagos islands? Ecuador is hands down my favorite country...for its people, for nature, for food, roads...i mean, i had a fantastic time there. I also visited Galapagos and It was one of the highlights...of my life!! I simply incredible. If there was ever a place on earth close to Jurassic Park...
How does your license work? I mean if you have a drivers license in one country and you drive through multiple countries. What happens if you get pulled over? Having European or Australian driver license is sufficient to drive in most foreign countries. I do have an International Driver License, which is simply a piece of paper you can request from your local Automobile Club, that translates your license in many languages and which is helpful when finding an "scrutinous" policeman. At the borders they never check your driving license.

What about the motorbike's papers? Did you need a carnet de passage ? And could you tell us about the shipping of the bike, plane or boat, expense, level of organisation needed? For the americas, you don't need CdP. The shipping of bike could be done by cargo ship or plane. Both are not cheap but quite feasible. There are agencies that usually take care of the paperwork for you. A simple google search could help you pinpoint some good info. Unfortunately because rules and prices change from country to country, prices have to be requested to the company you choose. It is usually around $1500 + to ship a motorcycle indicatively...for both sea or air freight.
Can you speak on your base knowledge of bikes at the start of your travels? I'm interested in purchasing a bike to cruise around America in once (if) this pandemic blows over. Did you ever have to do any emergency DIY work when you couldnt make it to a garage for professuonal repairs? First of all: DO IT!! it's an amazing experience. I had basic/zero motorcycle mechanical skills when I started. I often used youtube as a source of "inspiration". Now I rather do the job myself than taking my bike into a shop. If you are going to cruise around the US, you wont need to carry much spares, since you can buy and have most parts shipped wherever you are. Somehow even breaking down, if happens, is a great part of the overall adventure.
[deleted] I am not sure. Yet. Definitely the more I go on with this adventure (and life) the more I become aware of myself and my surroundings. I am looking forward to have somehow a peaceful life in harmony with my surroundings. Stress has been out of my life for a while now and I want to keep it this way. Don't have a family. Never had kids or wives. I think it's going to stay this way...but you never know.
the below is a reply to the above
You've been doing this 5 years now. Do you feel the need to keep moving after you've been somewhere for a few days? How long is the longest you've been stationary since staring and did you ever feel like you wanted to get off the road for a longer time. Well...yes I always feel the need to see something more and explore. I get bored easily. But I have to say that during my Lockdown in Greece I was absolutely at peace. I really enjoyed my down time and i took advantage of it by taking care of many little things i left behind.
Did you tend to keep to yourself most of the time, or would you go out to meet people and socialize with the locals in the area? I am not really a "social beast" anymore. I socialize in hostels and when I look for food mostly...but I don't go out at night. That is quite personal, but I prefer a quiet night than pubs. This allowed me somehow to save a lot of money in the long run. I may have missed out in "social opportunities", but I prefer this way.
the below is a reply to the above
But you did meet a lot of people right? Im not social at all and it keeps me from traveling, im afraid that it would ruin the experience if I dont click with anyone haha. You gave me some confidence this will be a smaller problem than I think it is. I am an introvert and generally speaking, kind of a geek. So yeah...not really the outgoing kind of guy...but, when travelling alone, you don't have that social pressure anymore. You are by yourself and there's nothing to tell you what you have or not have to do. you are free. And will meet tons of people!!
Where do you stay at (camping, airbnb, rental, etc) ? Where you get money from? What do you usually carry with you? What is you most essential item? Have you made many friends? I mostly stay in Hostels (when is cheap enough). In latin America, you can pay from $5-$10 for a night in a shared dorm. When in remote areas, I camp. Best thing ever. Otherwise I use Couchsurfing. Occasionally I stay with friends and/or other bikers that got to know my story and want to help out. I live off my own savings. Most essential Item is "Common sense". AKA try not to do extremely stupid things. :)
the below is a reply to the above
How far do you usually have to plan ahead to find couchsurfing accommodations? The one thing that has deterred me from trying it out is that my motorcycle trips almost never stick to the schedule I have planned. Either due to unforeseen circumstances or maybe just deciding to ride around an area longer. Have you given people on CS a range of dates/times that you would arrive, or do you have to have your arrivals planned thoroughly? Yes, you usually have to investigate one or two weeks ahead to find accommodation with couchsurfing. Especially because I am a single guy. If i was a girl, i could find somewhere to sleep in few hours. Ahah. Oh well, women are less threatening i guess! ;) But yeah. You do need to check first and give a rough estimate of days of your permanence. Typically 2-3 days is the max. Then if both parties are ok, you can extend.
Have you ever done any housesitting for accommodation? I've done smaller trips like this, staying in hostels and campsites. I've heard of housesitting more recently and once I go again I'm thinking of trying it out. When looking at listings though it almost seems to good to be true. I just wonder if there is a catch to it I ve never done housesitting specifically. But I ve used HelpX, Workaway, woofing, etc to find occasional gigs that allowed me to get accommodation in return of small jobs. In Greece i stayed in a 9 apts complex on the beach by myself, in exchange of cleaning and painting! Great deal indeed
the below is another reply to the second answer
If you were a woman, there would also be far more risks to couch surfing alone. I'd definitely prefer planning over higher risk of sexual assault. Women have more chances of getting hosted because there are a lot of women hosts too. Or couples. They are definitely more willing to host a woman. But i get your point
the below is another reply to the original answer
Thanks, got another question. What is enough savings for a year in Latin America? well, it really depends of what kind of lifestyle you want. If you are ok sleeping in hostels every night and eating cheap market food...doesn't really take much! depending on which countries you want to visit too and how you want to move around! you can do it hitchhiking too if you want! and that won't cost you a thing! Just time!
How did you manage to not have your motorcycle stolen? Common sense. Mostly parked inside or in "safe areas" when possible. You can never be 100% sure but I never had issues of sort in my 5 years of travelling. Actually somebody stole my tool bag in Vancouver, Canada.
the below is a reply to the above
As a Canadian id like to say “sorry”. apologies accepted! ;)
the below is another reply to the original answer
As a Vancouverite, I'm not surprised. We have a large homeless population and they target anything they can find to steal and sell. It wasn't a homeless guy per se...was definitely a junkie. I went to Hastings street 3 days in a row to see if i could find my stuff...but it was gone. Bummer.
how were the first few months without the things that you were used to having? (sorry for the bad english, it isn't my main language) Your english is fine, mate! First month was HARD! 😅 I had never camped in my life and the longest moto trip I took by that time was only 350km. So yeah, in the beginnings the learning curve was steep! Basic things like "where to sleep at night every night" or "how to store food" were kind of abstract concepts for me. My first night camping was also my first night on the road. It was horrible. I paid so much money to camp in a so so campground, with noisy and drunk neighbors. It also rained at night. Haha An absolute fail! It got better and better with time. Also looking for food, packing and taking care of the bike. It was a full immersion in a brand new lifestyle for me. A great experience indeed
the below is a reply to the above
Paolo, your first night camping sounds ... well, it sounds really terrible! I'm curious how you would compare that first inexperienced night with say... an average night camping somewhere, anywhere, I don't know... say 2-4 years later after having done it for a while. In which ways did that first inexperienced night of camping come to differ from your more seasoned camping night to night later on? What kinds of routines did you end up falling into on those nights that you picked up from years of experience having done it? Well...let's just say that my love for camping escalated quickly as well. I started camping in the wild...not in confined facilities, and I simply loved it. Sitting quietly in front of the fire at night, after a long day riding, watching the stars appear slowly in the sky... The silence. I learned that camping in a busy campsite, with kids screaming and music playing is not the kind of camping I was looking for. Surely is great for families, because usually it is a safe environment for kids to play in, but for solo travellers looking for some quiet is not. Better to hide somewhere behind a tree or some bushes and have a quiet night with some privacy. Free of charge.
How badly do you stink? Joking of course, good luck with your adventures. If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? ;)
Not to be nosey but what would qualify as enough money to "sustain yourself for a while"? And how long do you consider that "a while" to be? I had no Idea how much It would cost me to live, travel and not work, since I had never done it before. But I knew how much It costed me to live in Sydney for a year, without any extras (just food, accommodation, rent and bills). I assumed initially that my trip around the world would have lasted a maximum of 1 year and a half. Was I wrong! I pretty much had saved $40k in 5 years of work.
Thanks for doing this! How much do you talk to strangers? I can imagine either being very sociable, or taking the opportunity to be more solitary. Also, when you were traveling the world, how specifically did you keep in contact with friends and family back home? Was one service/approach more effective than another? I love to talk with Locals!! It's the best thing! I love to talk with older people especially. They can really give you a better perspective about the place and overall more interesting stories about their lives. Sometimes there's a language barrier but I try regardless. Hostels are also a great place to meet friends and people from all over the world. Aside from this, travelling solo on a motorcycle or bicycle naturally attracts curiosity, so I also met some good friends of mine at gas stations or random rest areas in the middle of nowhere.
To keep in touch with family and friends nowadays is quite easy. Mobile data networks are excellent worldwide and you can buy local sim cards to use local carriers data traffic. I use whatsapp and fb messenger the most.
What kind of income are you receiving to sustain this lifestyle long-term? Living off my life savings. I am self supported. Just worked for few years, saving as much as I could and then took off.
the below is a reply to the above
That sounds epic... Met a few guys like that, but never had the balls to do so myself. If you read this: how much of a mechanic are you? Do you do stuff yourself of do you bring your bike to the shop for maintenance/tires? At the beginning I wasn't really able to do much on my bike, except changing brake pads maybe. Then I tried and read forums online about troubleshooting...and of course youtube mate!! I tend to have a mechanic change my tyres, since it's a hell of a job and takes 4 minutes with proper machines. you can find tyre mechanics literally EVERYWHERE.
the below is another reply to the original answer
But, with the estimate you gave it would cost like 9k usd per year to maintain that lifestyle. You’ve been doing it for 5 years. I guess it’s hard for a lot of Americans to imagine saving up 45k+ in the few years that you worked. trust me, It's even harder for an italian to conceive to save up 40k in 5 years of work. Most italians will be able to save that amount maybe in 10-15 years. That's why I quit my job in italy and moved to Australia, where salaries are way higher. It's just sad that I had to leave my family, friends and country to be able to have a better life.
the below is another reply to the original answer
Why dont you try to register for welfare in Australia, and get the welfare cheques deposited into your account? I thought about it while riding around Australia. But I didn't find it fair. I mean, I wasn't in need of cash to sustain my living and there were probably people who seriously did. Plus I think you have to show up for interviews and I preferred to let go.
OP, you're doing what I've dreamed of doing since I was about 21... I'm 32 now. I've saved a bit of money, and have no debt, and am still considering it... but feel as though it would be irresponsible at this point? shrugs I have a few questions, Ever considered staying at a spot for a few weeks and doing some manual labor for extra scratch to help you along in your travels? Ever had any problem with weird parasites in some of your rougher spots (scabies, bedbugs, intestinal issues) such as cheap hostels and whatnot? Since you don't go to bars or anything like that, what's the easiest way for you to meet new people? Ever felt any "I'm about to get robbed" vibes while on the road? Did you make rules like not traveling too late, etc.. I'm considering doing this very thing, since I make a good living but am already a minimalist and don't really need anything... I don't care about owning a house, or having nice clothes or any of that nonsense. I suppose it'd just be a drag to hit a dead end, have to return to the workforce after a few years of traveling and finding myself unable to secure a decent gig again. Anyways, if you've read this, thanks for your time and thanks for doing this AMA! Good luck man, and stay safe. Mate, when I left for my first trip around Australia, I was I completely understand where you are coming from. It take a bit of time to prepare and commit to this. I highly recommend it though. I stopped occasionally and did some jobs, yes, but were more like small temporary gigs...that paid maybe for a new set of tyres than anything. Still! Once I pressured washed mine trucks for a week in South Australia. Haha i was covered in mudd but I was happy. I also cleaned few apartments in greece in exchange of accommodation....things like that. Things will come your way if you look hard enough.
Didn't have any problems with bugs or parasites no. Got lucky on this one i guess. But i do believe I built my immune system pretty well.
The easiest way to meet people is in hostels. Being in your 30s you are already on the "old side" for a hostel, but you are still ok. ;) haha
Sometimes yes i felt i was going to get robbed or mugged...but never happened. I never travel with cameras and other expensive items with me. When i am on the bike, there s always the "surprise effect", meaning that people are more shocked to see somebody travelling solo than tempted to rob him right away.
How has the pandemic altered any future travel plans? The pandemic changed things quite drastically. A lot of other travellers I know got stuck somewhere or had to cancel their plans until further notice. Still not sure what to do in the long terms. Covid definitely made everything more unpredictable.
What are the cheapest and best places you would suggest a young person go visit? Also, just out of curiosity, when do you think you’ll stop? Well, there are plenty of great places to go explore on a tight budget. Latin America and South East Asia are generally speaking quite cheap. I would recommend Bolivia or Peru, in SA...and Cambodia in SEA. As a start...
I Hope I will be able to go on for few more years...but so far I am pretty content with what I've done already.
How do you overcomevia issues? I believe you referred to "Visa issues"?!
Well, having an Italian passport is quite handy since you get visa on arrival (valid for 1-3 months) as a tourist in most of the countries in the world. I had to request and pay for my Russian and Mongolian visa though. You can request that 1-2 weeks before entry in any available Embassy.

And what about other practical stuff like insurance for the motorcycle(is it allowed to be abroad for such a long time ?) ? Maybe obligatory x-yearly technical vehicle inspections (so far not needed in a lot of european countries but about to change so you were lucky I guess) ? Official site of residence (or what is it called, it is really hard to be 'homeless' in some countries, probably depends on what your current 'home country' is ) ? Ok so, insurance for motorcycle is something you need to get every time you enter a new country. Some insurance companies will insure foreign vehicles, but it isn't always the case. My bike is australian so after a certain point you need to inspect the vehicle to renew the registration. There is a process through which you can go to an associated mechanic in the country where you are and have the vehicle inspected and the results sent to the Australian motorvehicle authority. Then you can renew your papers online and have the new registration sent to you overseas. My official country of residence is still Australia, because it is where I want to go back to.
the below is a reply to the above
Thanks for the response. I can imagine it is not the most interesting thing to talk about but I am planning on doing something similar with a van + motorcycle (that fits in the van) combo so I am super interested in hearing about the (boring) administrative side of someone who is actually doing it :D. I had no idea something was possible like the remote inspection, I hope something similar exists in my country too. So far I only read you have to go to inspection asap when returning to your country if you were abroad. But I can imagine that is not going to fly if you plan on being away for a very long time though :P. Also: did you happen to keep a list of insurance companies that were willing to do it ? In that sense things change rapidly and new and better companies may arise. Better check with locals or use iOverlander app to find these kind of info.

Inside the online cult of #JusticeforSSR The story of three men united by their fever-pitch resentment towards Rhea Chakraborty, and their anger and grief at the death of a Bollywood star.
A picture posted on a popular Facebook group shows actor Rhea Chakraborty next to a coronavirus illustration. “Which virus is more dangerous?” shouts the text on the image. The caption says: “2020 worst year in the history of mankind. The two most dangerous virus against humanity.”
The Facebook group in question is called “Justice for Sushant Singh Rajput”. With over one lakh followers, it’s peppered with posts hashtagged #ArrestRheaChakraborty and #IAmSushant.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
“She should be hanged,” said Singh Dheeraj, one of the group’s five administrators. “But then again, in our country, it took very long for even Afzal Guru or Yakub Memon to be hanged..."
Dheeraj is a final-year engineering student in Faridabad. He agreed to talk to me over a Facebook Messenger call only after he confirmed that I’m a “nationalist”. “I’m against anti-nationalism,” he told me. About being one of the admins of the Facebook group, he said, chuckling: “I have not told my parents or friends. They will think that I am not focusing on my studies.”
For a nation obsessed with Bigg Boss**, viewers no longer need to wait for an episode to be shot and aired. A version of this reality show, well-known for its voyeuristic appeal, plays out all day, every day, on social media and TV news screens. Ever since actor Sushant Singh Rajput died in June, the saga that followed has unfolded on our screens, and the past month has been particularly binge-worthy.**
In a profile by the New York Times in June, talk show host Jon Stewart said, “Twenty-four-hour news networks are built for one thing, and that’s 9/11. There are very few events that would justify being covered 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So in the absence of urgency, they have to create it.”
And this is exactly what’s happened following Rajput’s death. Except this isn’t a movie — Chakraborty cannot take off her make-up and go home at the end of the day. Instead, she’s been thrust into a real-life trial by the media, where everyone watching, from national television anchors to quiet college-going students, has turned jurist.
In the process, Chakraborty has been torn apart by leading TV news channels, which demand her arrest, accuse her of “black magic” , camp out outside her building, pass off conspiracy theories as “news”, and conduct “postmortems” of Rajput himself. Republic’s Arnab Goswami screaming about drugs is only surpassed by Times Now’s Navika Kumar breathlessly running into the studio claiming to have a bag full of incriminating documents.
“It isn’t that Arnab or Navika don’t know what they’re doing,” said Pratik Sinha, founder of fact-checking site Alt News**. “They know exactly what and why they go on camera for. They have people to please.”**
Instead, it’s worth asking why young men and women like Dheeraj, who have never met either Rajput or Chakraborty, suddenly find themselves dedicating hours to administering Facebook groups that seek “justice for Sushant”.
For this, I spoke to three men – Saahil Chaudhary, an aspiring actomodel; Surjeet Singh Rathore, a member of the Karni Sena, a caste Hindu group; and Dheeraj. What links them is their fever-pitch resentment towards Chakraborty, and their anger and grief at the death of a Bollywood star.

Humans of #ArrestRheaChakraborty

Over the course of lengthy conversations, I asked all the three men where they found their conviction to convict Rhea Chakraborty.
Singh Dheeraj
Dheeraj hadn’t been a big fan of Rajput; what drew him was the fact that Rajput, like himself, was also from Bihar and managed to make it big in Bollywood.
For Dheeraj, the logic is fairly simple as to why he believes that Rajput was murdered, and did not die by suicide.
“How can they suddenly call him crazy now?” he said, possibly referring to reports on Rajput’s mental health. “It must have something to do with the fact that Rhea was living with him, right?”
This is a popular theory. Rajput’s therapist broke confidentiality last month and said the actor had depression and bipolar disorder. While the therapist also said Chakraborty was his “strongest support”, Rajput’s family has claimed that he “started having mental problems” after Chakraborty “came into his life”.
When I asked Dheeraj what kind of changes he thinks Chakraborty brought into Rajput’s life, he paused and came up with this anecdote, which he said is tied to the idea of an “ideal home”.
“Agar Salman [Khan] ki girlfriend ya wife aur Salman ke beech scene hua, toh kiska chalega? Salman ka hi chalega. Aur jabki yahan par Sushant aur Rhea ke sath jo scene hua, usme kiska chala tha? Rhea ka chala tha,” he said. (If something happens between Salman Khan and his girlfriend or wife, who will win? Salman will. And here, if something happened between Sushant and Rhea, who used to win? Rhea used to.)
But why did he think Chakraborty was controlling Rajput? Dheeraj brought up how Chakraborty tried to “change” Rajput’s staff members and friends.
“She had things to hide...look how she was acting with Mahesh Bhatt,” he said. “Was it correct of her to behave that way when she was with Sushant? Anyway, I am a nationalist, I am anti-Bollywood, anti-Rhea and anti-all these drugs and alcohol she used to do.” He refused to elaborate further.
This feeds into the image of Chakraborty constructed by the mainstream media. Photos of her posing on a beach in swimwear, or videos of her working out in sportswear are repeatedly shown during panel discussions, suggesting to viewers, like Dheeraj, that she’s some sort of promiscuous, gold-digging seductress with no “morality” or “culture”.
After some hesitation, he admitted that he believes Chakraborty deserves capital punishment, though he was quick to add: “Justice should be achieved but not hanging. Anyway in our country it was already difficult to hang people like Yakub Memon or Afzal Guru so obviously she cannot be hanged...but she should be punished...Women are like goddesses for me.”
Dheeraj didn’t watch Dil Bechara**, the movie starring Rajput that released after the latter’s death, because he was juggling between his studies and the Facebook group. He also spends a large part of his day “counselling” women, he said. “Him [Rajput] going away has caused a lot of sadness to many girls,” he explained. “I send them videos...I try to make them understand.”**
Saahil Chaudhary
Not far from Dheeraj, in the same state of Haryana, Saahil Chaudhary took to his YouTube channel on August 27, minutes after Chakraborty gave her first television interview to Rajdeep Sardesai on Aaj Tak.
Wearing a fitted white t-shirt and a neatly shaped beard, Chaudhary folded his hands and addressed his two lakh followers: “Somebody please hammer Rajdeep Sardesai’s head.” He spewed expletives against Chakraborty — zaleel aurath, haram ki bachhi and madarchodd ki bachhi being some of them — while his followers echoed his views gleefully in the comments section below, calling Chakraborty a “prostitute” and a “lady Dawood”.
This video received over 2.85 lakh views on YouTube.
Chaudhary has been busy for the last few months, providing daily updates on the investigation into Rajput’s death. He posted his first video on June 17, two days after Rajput died, telling his viewers that it was his “duty” to “expose the dirty secrets of Bollywood”.
In the video, Chaudhary claimed to have met Rajput “four or five times”. “He was such a gentleman, so kind-hearted. Today, I’m not going to spare anyone.” Since then, Chaudhary has uploaded 48 similar videos. According to him, Chakraborty must be arrested at once and the powerful in Bollywood should be shamed.
Importantly, when I spoke to Chaudhary, he denied having ever met the actor. During our conversation, his own frustrations at not being able to “make it big” in Bollywood were evident. “Out of lakhs of people, one got a chance and he became a star, but then you killed him?” he said. “What the fuck? You murdered him?”
Chaudhary runs a gym in Haryana, and has been trying to make it as an actor and model for over 10 years. Unable to be cast even as the friend of the hero, he started to explore YouTube to make himself more visible, he said. From cooking videos to workout videos to health tips and now the Rajput case, he feels like he’s finally found a platform to gain some stardom.
Although, he added, none of his videos on YouTube are monetised. Chaudhary has over two lakh subscribers on his channel. His most-watched video, with over two million views, is regarding who Chakraborty is dating.
When I asked him for the source of his information to declare Chakraborty guilty, Chaudhary said that people sent him articles and photos that he “verifies using logic”. After this “verification”, he concluded: “Rhea is hiding facts and is involved in the murder.” During the course of our chat, he also claimed that Chakraborty is a “gold-digger” who was having an affair with director Mahesh Bhatt.
So, what would he tell Chakraborty if he ever met her? “I don’t want to talk to her,” he replied. “I will simply do what the entire public wants to do: uske kaan ke neeche bajaunga main. I will give her a tight slap. I am sure that when this happens, the public will be satisfied. With this one slap, Sushant Singh’s parents and sisters will be at peace.”
Surjeet Singh Rathore
YouTube is Chaudhary’s platform of choice, but Surjeet Singh Rathore came into the limelight when he appeared on Arnab Goswami’s primetime show on Republic Bharat on August 21.
The show was hashtagged #WhySorryRhea, and Rathore was introduced as an “eyewitness” who was reportedly present when Chakraborty saw Rajput’s body at the Cooper Hospital mortuary. According to Rathore, Chakraborty “confessed” to her crime then; she placed her hand on her chest and said, “Sorry, babu.”
“Why is she saying sorry? Was she involved?” Rathore asked Goswami, who took long, dramatic pauses and repeatedly asked Rathore to describe Chakraborty’s demeanour.
Rathore is a member of the Karni Sena, a Rajput group. When I spoke to him on the telephone, he said he was in Rajasthan, the Karni Sena’s home state, from where he would “speak the truth”. After appearing on Republic, he claimed, Mumbai became “unsafe” for him. “I am not scared,” he added. “If something happens to me or Kangana Ranaut, Karni Sena poori Hindustan mein aag lagaenge. The Karni Sena will set fire to the whole of India.”
What does that mean? He replied, “Don’t you remember our Padmavat movement?”
Here’s a quick refresher: In 2017, the Karni Sena led a violent campaign against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie Padmavat, claiming it tarnished the reputation of Rajputs and misappropriated history. Before the movie was released, Karni Sena workers vandalised the film set, slapped the director, trashed a theatre playing the movie’s trailer, threatened to cut off actor Deepika Padukone’s nose and behead Padukone and Bhansali, moved petitions to ban the film, and received support from the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The group eventually retreated when Padmavat was released, saying there was, after all, “nothing objectionable” in the film.
Rathore told me he had once spoken to Sushant Singh Rajput on the phone when the Padmavat incident occurred, to tell Rajput not to support Bhansali. Apart from that, they’ve never met, though he met Chakraborty once, according to him, at the mortuary. As he explained to Goswami, he apparently went to the mortuary to see Sushant as a fellow Rajput.
Why is Rathore so involved in this case?
“I am a Rajput. I am a member of the Karni Sena. Sushant was also a Rajput, it’s my right to be involved,” Rathore replied.
When he left the mortuary, he said, Aaj Tak spoke to him but the interview never aired. So, Rathore approached Arnab Goswami who helped him “bring the news to the world”. Rathore added that Chakraborty must be arrested “as soon as possible” on the basis of her saying “Sorry, babu” to Rajput’s body.
In his post-Republic days, Rathore spends his time answering “calls from all across the country, mostly from my supporters and from TV channels”. He has a girlfriend but he quickly said, “Woh Rhea jaisi nahi hai.” She is not like Rhea.
Currently, Rathore’s Facebook page, which has over 21,000 followers, is filled with posts seeking justice for Rajput, Rathore’s TV interviews, and pictures from his time in Jaipur. One photo shows him standing on a terrace, arms extended, with the caption: “For success in need two things...Ignorance and confidence...❤️ My Jaipur.”

Politics to the Right

Through the course of my conversations with these men, it became apparent that what irritated them the most was Chakraboty’s alleged infidelity. As men, they seemed to empathise with the pain Rajput might have gone through of loving a “morally corrupt woman”.
Apart from that, the other common thread was their tendency to be aligned with the Right. However, only Dheeraj openly proclaimed his support for the BJP; both Rathore and Chaudhary said this issue isn’t political.
Dheeraj’s affinity towards the Right came forward in our conversation when he asked me if I had worked as a reporter during the citizenship law protests, and what I felt about BJP leader Kapil Mishra’s role. Mishra had made an incendiary speech in February targeting the protesters against the Citizenship Amendment Act, and the Delhi riots followed soon after, leaving over 50 dead.
When I told him that no matter what side I’m on, violence is not the way out, he said, “Violence for religion is justifiable. There are Muslims living in my lane. Tomorrow if they block the road, there is a limit to how long one can wait for the police before taking action himself.”
He also brought up Asifa Bhano, the eight-year-old who was raped and murdered in Jammu in 2018. “Why is that when Asifa, that Muslim child, was raped in a temple in Jammu, all Bollywood celebrities came out and shamed the country?” he said. “What about Hindu women? I am not saying they should not speak about the injustice against Asifa, I’m just saying you cannot internationally shame your country. These celebrities, they are not with us Hindus. They are not with the country.”
Dheeraj, Chaudhary and Rathore all agreed that the only journalists currently doing his job correctly is Arnab Goswami. Dheeraj added that he’s a fan of Zee News’ Sudhir Chaudhary and Aaj Tak’s Anjana Om Kashyap — both of whom are also known for their proclivity towards the BJP.

Lack of moderation of hate content

After these chats, I went through 15 Facebook pages dedicated to fighting for “justice” for Rajput, which has now become synonymous with arresting Chakraborty. These pages are managed by 35 admins in total, of which 20 seemed to have authentic profiles on Facebook, three were clearly fake, three were aliases, and nine I couldn’t tell.
I identified fake profiles based on the fact that they had no personal or authentic pictures. The profile images were either pictures of Rajput or representational images, the friends list was limited, and there was no personal information like place of work.
There was no consistent pattern to be established between the profiles, apart from their support for Rajput, love for Goswami, and hate towards Chakraborty. Some had a history of hateful, communal posts, or far-Right posts, some had posts critical of the government, and others had almost no political posts at all.
Here’s a sample of the sort of hate spewed against Chakraborty.
In the background of this venom is the fact that Facebook India has been facing tough questions in recent weeks over its propensity to ignore hate speech. A Wall Street Journal piece reported on Facebook’s soft approach to posts inciting violence by members of the BJP, although the social media giant has robust policies for the same — on paper, at least.
It doesn’t take much to notice that most of the pages I surveyed violate multiple regulations and standards set by Facebook, especially with regards to hate speech, bullying and harassment , and violence and incitement. Nevertheless, most of them have been online for over six weeks, and continue to garner a massive following and rapid engagement.

The news and us

So, let’s return to this question: What does the Sushant Singh Rajput case reveal about us?
It’s a vile but immensely sustainable, and successful, ecosystem, and I reached out to Alt News’ Pratik Sinha to learn more. Alt News has largely kept away from reporting on the news coverage of Rajput’s death.
As Sinha said: “I can bust facts, not gossip.”
News has now entered the realm of gossip, Sinha said, which is rooted in “mudslinging and rumour-mongering”. “Gossip is addictive. I don’t know what to bust in this bizarre case...Initially it looked like this incident was used as a campaign strategy for the upcoming Bihar election, but right now? It has somehow gained a life of its own. Where should one draw the line between freedom of speech and freedom of life?”
Sinha described the viral nature of this “news” as “coordinated inauthentic behaviour”.
A coordinate effort at hate often has two motives, financial or political. In the circus surrounding Rajput’s death, it’s impossible to pinpoint either with clarity. For the many young people involved, Sinha said, being able to earn instant recognition is motive enough.
“For example, maybe for this boy Dheeraj, if not for this case he might not have had women coming up and talking to him,” he said. “Now this may seem frivolous but for him, this must be life-changing.”
What forms a narrative, Sinha explained, is the size of the body that sustains it. Leading channels like Republic and Zee News serve up content that is religiously shared by these Facebook pages. So, who is the trigger: the public, or the news? Has social media ensured that if there’s enough public outrage, news organisations will have to take notice? Or do news channels, in their race for TRPs, produce content tailormade to appeal to the nation’s imagination?
It’s a chicken-and-egg situation, so it’s impossible to accurately answer.
For those without financial or political ambitions, this case seems to have given them a sense of purpose, or “social currency”, as Sinha called it. Dheeraj told me that apart from support, he also receives threats from Shahrukh Khan or Aamir Khan fans. Does that scare him? He immediately and excitedly replied, “No, no, not at all. Maybe it will be good if something big happens with me.”
When it comes to news channels, no matter what came first, media houses ensured that the story stayed alive. In the last month alone, there were four child rapes in New Delhi and a rise in caste- and gender-based violence in Uttar Pradesh. The economy is down, the unemployment rate is up, floods and monsoons have displaced thousands, and the ongoing pandemic claims hundreds of lives every day.
Yet all of this takes a backseat when compared to the Rajput case. Has the case become a distraction from the very real social and cultural fears that we face? As Orwell once said, “Unpopular ideas can be silenced, and inconvenient facts kept dark, without the need for any official ban.”
On Facebook allowing such content to thrive, Sinha said: “Content moderation is most often a business decision. If you take down a post or page that has over one lakh followers, then it means you lose that many eyeballs, which then means you lose that many people looking at advertisements. And that’s where the money flows in for these platforms. So most often, these policies are only written down, not implemented.”
In the last decade, two media trials stand out: the Aarushi murder case and the death of Sunanda Pushkar. Neither found a satisfying judicial conclusion. Trials by the media don’t happen impulsively, Sinha pointed out. “Every day, we scratch our heads as to what is happening today. But it isn’t like we were fine yesterday or the day before, right?” he said.
And ultimately, no matter the outcome of the investigation into Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, the biggest reveal by the media is what this case has exposed when it comes to our society.

Its been long enough. I’ve let this percolate for three months. No one has guessed the correct location, as far as I can tell. This is the solution to Forrest’s puzzle. I will reveal the location of the first two clues, and show you how to solve some of the remaining clues. I’m not going to tell you the answer to all the clues or give you the final location. Where’s the fun in that? I’ll get you close enough to finish it yourself without too much difficulty, if you are willing to put forth some effort. I’ll even tell you where to park your car, but you’ll need to solve the final few clues for yourself (or as a community) to identify the hiding place.
I wrote this to publish as an article. However, I don’t want to go into a lot of back story about Forrest and The Thrill of the Chase and the treasure. I’d rather just speak directly to the search community. This seemed like the most neutral place to provide the solution, despite the skeptics. I will remain anonymous, but you get the solution. No, I will not be at the Fishing Bridge today.
The puzzle was enormously difficult to solve, mainly because Forrest provided no instructions. He left enough bread crumbs to follow the trail, and he dropped enough extra hints over the years to confirm the right path as I worked through the solution. Explaining how to solve the puzzle is challenging, and its not simple.
Initial Thoughts
The story of how I solved the puzzle deserves a separate article. It took some failed attempts and many, many long hours of study to solve the puzzle. My first search near the location was in May 2017. I went back in July 2019 after I had solved the puzzle correctly. Back in 2017, I had not even keyed into the existence of the puzzle. However, this article focuses only on the solution.
Forrest was very careful with his language over the years, and you needed to pay close attention to his words to glean the correct insights that were hidden within his statements. He provided a lot of confirming hints and statements over the years that helped me as I solved the puzzle. His statements were never really direct enough to give much away, but once you start to understand the solution a lot of what Forrest said provided vague confirmation. More on that later.
I relied solely on information that was publicly available to everyone to solve the puzzle.
A lot of things that Forrest said over the years were widely misinterpreted. There were also a lot of common misconceptions about how to solve the puzzle. Certain aspects of the puzzle were misinterpreted in the early years, and just never seemed to get corrected within the search community. The “little girl from India” comments in particular led many people astray. Forrest was completely truthful with his answer, but his answer was misinterpreted.
So let’s get two of the biggest misconceptions out of the way. First, the poem is not a set of walking instructions. The poem was intentionally written in this manner, but that was an enormous red herring. I think this is the biggest reason that most people never came anywhere close to discovering the solution to the puzzle. Most people failed to even grasp there was a puzzle to solve, like me initially.
Second, you must have “The Thrill of the Chase” (which I will just call the “Book”) to solve the puzzle. There simply is no other way. The answers to a majority of the clues, and the associated dates which serve as the foundation of the solution, are only in the Book. The Book is basically one giant puzzle. The solution leads you to a precise geographic point, just as Forrest said from the very beginning. Read on and hopefully you will understand.
Some Helpful Concepts
A few things will help you understand how to solve the puzzle. Some of these things have nothing to do with Forrest’s puzzle, but help to explain the solution in a way that you can more easily understand.
Have you ever played the game Battleship? Each player’s board is a grid. There have been many different variations, but the basic game has 1-10 along the bottom (the “X” axis columns) and A-J on the side (the “Y” axis rows). The bottom left is A-1 and the top right is J-10. A player calls out coordinates such as C-6, hit or miss is declared, repeat repeat repeat until you sink the other player’s five ships. Remember this grid as you read on.
Let's imagine that you want to hide a treasure chest in the mountains, and you wanted to show someone how to find it with precision. The easiest way? GIS coordinates.
Let's say that you wanted to make a puzzle of this search. You could construct a puzzle that reveals the GIS coordinates. Too simple, and you want to make a hard puzzle.
How to make it more challenging? Place the chest on an imaginary grid. Build a puzzle to construct the grid. Provide clues to show where to place the grid on the planet. Provide clues to reveal the location of the chest on the grid. Solve this puzzle, place the grid correctly on the planet, identify the correct vector point on the grid, and you can go right to a precise geographic location using this grid method.
An Example
Let’s say that I'm going to hide a treasure chest in your back yard. (Yes, the chest was not buried, but follow this as an example.) Your back yard is big, 50 feet wide and 50 feet deep. I create an imaginary 10'x10' grid that I will place somewhere in your back yard. The sides will not line up precisely with the boundaries of your back yard, and instead the grid will be tilted a bit.
The bottom left of the grid is the 0,0 point (think of the A-1 point in Battleship) and the top right is 10,10 (the J-10 point in Battleship). On my imaginary grid, the unit of measurement is one foot – each point on the X and Y axes are one foot apart. I would need to give you three clues to solve this back yard puzzle and go directly to the buried treasure chest:
(1) where 0,0 point of the grid goes in your back yard,
(2) where 10,10 point goes, to orient the grid correctly in your yard, and
(3) the vector point on the grid where the chest is buried.
Let’s say that I hide the chest at the 6,7 point on the grid (X=6, Y=7). I show, through clever clues, that the 0,0 point is the NE edge of a large rock in your yard, and the 10,10 point is a bald spot that has been burned by the sun. The sides of this imaginary grid will not align with the sides of your yard, but if you place the two corners of the grid at the exact correct locations based on the rock and the bald spot, the grid will be oriented correctly.
If you orient the grid correctly according to my instructions, then you go dig at the 6,7 point on the grid, there is the treasure! I have shown you where to dig by orienting my imaginary grid based on geographic features in your yard, and this revealed the location with extreme precision, down to the foot.
The Grid
This is how to solve Forrest Fenn's puzzle. Forrest built an imaginary grid and placed the chest at a precise point on the grid. The puzzle is solved by unlocking this grid, and plotting the correct vector points on the grid to reveal the location. The clues reveal where to place the grid on the planet, where the 0,0 point is located, (where warm waters halt) where the upper right corner of the grid is located (the put in below the home of Brown), and the vector point where the chest is located on the grid. Forrest’s unit of measurement on this grid was also extremely accurate, to the foot.
The little girl from India could technically solve the first two clues in the poem because they reference two distinct geographic points in Yellowstone National Park. It would be nearly impossible for her to get these points right without the Book, but technically possible. The little girl cannot solve the remaining clues, not because she has to be at the location to follow the clues as walking instructions, but because the answers to the remaining clues are cleverly woven into the stories in the Book. Then, you need to derive the dates associated with the answers and turn them into vector points on the grid, to build the grid and reveal the location. These steps took me about a year to solve.
Yes, there is Math
One other very important point about solving the puzzle. Do you remember Pythagorean’s Theorem from geometry class? Yeah, I didn’t either, and I had to look it up as I worked through the solution. You can solve for the distance between the 0,0 point on the grid and any other vector point on the grid by using Pythagorean’s Theorem. This theorem is the formula for determining the distance of the longest side of a right triangle by using the length of the two other sides.
In my back yard grid, I hid the treasure at the 6,7 vector point. The square root of the sum of 6 squared (36) plus 7 squared (49) is 85, and the square root of 85 is about 9.22. The distance between the 0,0 point and the 6,7 point on my imaginary back yard grid is 9.22 feet. This is a key part of solving the puzzle, and how you determine the exact distance between the first two clues on the grid in Forrest’s puzzle. This is how Forrest built a form of confirming proof into the solution, and its how to unlock the first two clues and know you have placed the grid at the correct place in Yellowstone.
Constructing The Grid
The first clue to “begin it where warm waters halt” is where you place the 0,0 point of the grid. Forrest instructed that solving this clue is critical because if you don’t solve this correctly, the grid is in the wrong location on the planet and all of the other vector points on the grid are out of place.
The second clue to “put in below the home of Brown” is where you place the upper right corner of the grid on the planet. After you solve these first two clues correctly, you have placed the imaginary grid correctly, and all of the other vector points become accurate down to the foot. Like I said, its really ingenious.
The first two clues refer to geographic locations in Yellowstone. It took a lot of thinking to uncover the grid mechanism of the puzzle, and a lot of trial and error to figure out where to place the grid correctly. I’m going to gloss over the story of how I figured this out, which would take a long time to explain in another article, maybe for another day. I’m getting right to the solution.
Throughout the Book, Forrest provided dates to all of the key events in his life as told through the stories in the Book and in pictures in the Book. These dates are how you identify the vector points on the grid. One of the key bread crumbs that you need to follow to solve the puzzle is the postmarks at the beginning of most chapters in the Book and on the inside cover of the Book.
The postmarks generally have two categories. There are legible postmarks where you can see the entire date, and there are postmarks where the year is blurry. The legible postmarks all have one key element in common – the day of the week is wrong. That was a critical bread crumbs to follow to solve the puzzle.
As an example of a blurry postmark, inside the front cover, there is a big picture of Peggy Jean standing, hands on hips in a blouse and skirt, next to an airplane, gazing to the right of the picture frame and behind the airplane. The picture has “FT Clark” handwritten at the bottom, and the circle postmark on the side of the picture is “FRIDAY 10 Oct XXXX.” With a little research after reading through Forrest’s life stories in the Book, you would uncover that Ft. Clark is an airbase in the Philippines which is where Forrest was stationed for a time during the Vietnam war. The full date of the postmark is therefore Friday, 10 Oct 1957, and you would know this because October 10 fell on a Friday in 1957. Not by accident, this is four years to the day after they were married on October 10, 1953.
You can solve for all of the postmarks with blurry dates by matching up the postmark date with the event in a story or the time/location of a picture in the Book. Once you solve for these dates, you have two categories of dates – a group of dates associated with the legible postmarks, and a group of dates associated with the postmarks that have blurry dates. These two groupings of dates become the points on the X and Y axes of the imaginary grid. Once you pair up the clues in the poem with the correct events in Forrest’s life, you will have a pair of dates on the X and Y axes of the imaginary grid to place a vector point on the grid. Place these vector points correctly to reveal a picture (which resemble stars in a constellation), and it will lead you to a precise point on the grid where the treasure chest is located.
The “blaze” is not a physical object that you can see in the real world. The “blaze” is the constellation picture that you create by placing the vector points at the correct location on the grid. Once you have been wise and discovered the blaze by constructing the grid properly, you will see where the blaze points to show the location of the treasure.
Placing the Grid
There are two things that you must do correctly to reveal the location of the treasure chest: (1) place the grid in the correct location on the planet using the first two clues, and (2) correctly identifying all of the vector points to construct the “blaze” which reveals the location of the chest.
Time to dig into the dates. The earliest date on a postmark in the Book is November 7, 1930, which is the postmark associated with the chapter “Father on the Banco.” You can discover that this is the 0,0 mark because (1) it’s the earliest date of all the postmarks in the Book and (2) the date on this postmark does not correspond to when the story occurred – a significant aberration. (I also suspect that this story occurred only in a dream that Forrest had, dealing with the guilt associated with his good financial fortune in life.) All of the other postmark dates correspond correctly to the events in the chapter or the time when a picture was taken. November 7, 1930 is effectively the 0,0 point of the grid – the equivalent of the A-1 point in Battleship.
The two dates on the X and Y axes for the vector point of the second clue in the poem for the “put in below the home of Brown” are the dates from the “Gold and More” chapter and the “Ode to Peggy Jean” chapters. These dates are June 5, 2009 and August 15, 2005, respectively, which are exactly 28,700 days and 27,300 days from November 7, 1930 on the X and Y axes, respectively. (You can use some simple formulas in Excel to run these calculations.) Time to use Pythagorean’s Theorem – the distance of the line between these two points is calculated using the Pythagorean Theorem, which is the square root of the sum of those two numbers squared. The square root of (28,700 squared plus 27,300 squared) is 39,617.
Therefore, the distance from the first clue to the second clue is exactly 39,617 feet, which is right at 7.5 miles. The line on the giant imaginary grid from the 0,0 point at the lower left corner to the point that is the upper right corner of the grid is 7.5 miles. This is the distance that is “to far to walk.”
Again, I am skipping the part about how I figured this all out, but this calculation and the distance of this line is the built-in proof that Forrest provided to solve the puzzle correctly. The place “where warm waters halt” is the 0,0 mark of the grid, which is geographically where the Madison River exits the Madison Junction. Many people sort of guessed the answer to this clue, but not with precision. The GIS coordinates for the clue “where warm waters halt” is 44°38'31"N, -110°52'01"W.
When you “take it in the canyon down,” you’re are making an imaginary journey north through the Gibbon River canyon from the Madison Junction. The distance that is “not far, but to far to walk” is exactly 7.5 miles. The place associated with the “put in below the home of Brown” is precisely at this location: 44°42'24"N, -110°44'38"W. I would suggest you get on Google Earth and plot a line between these two GIS coordinates to see for yourself.
The “home of Brown” is the Chocolate Pots. An important element of placing this point at the correct location is to not follow due north on the map, but adjust for magnetic declination at this location. The grid is essentially “tipped” about 11.5 degrees off due north to correct for magnetic declination. This is why Forrest included the orange notations in the large map in his second book. The entire grid “pivots” on the 0,0 mark of the grid. If you don’t correct for magnetic declination, the 0,0 mark can be correct but all the other vector points are off.
Brown is capitalized because it is the only clue in the Poem that refers to a place that has a proper name on a real map – the Chocolate Pots. The place where warm waters halt, while theoretically referring to the location where the hot waters of the Gibbon and Firehole turn to cold water and flow out of Yellowstone, is not a place that has a particular name, but it does have precise GIS coordinates on Forrest’s imaginary grid. The place where warm waters halt is in the middle of the Madison River where it leaves the junction.
The clue “put in below the home of Brown” is the way that Forrest tells you when you’ve adjusted the tilt of the grid correctly – the end of the 7.5 mile line that starts at the 0,0 point of the grid in the Madison River leads precisely (to the foot!) to a turn-in picnic area on the west side of Grand Loop Road labeled “Gibbon Meadows” on the map of Yellowstone. This point is an easy walking distance to the geographic feature called the Chocolate Pots. The treasure chest was not near the second clue – the second clue is only to establish the correct grid placement.
The precision of the distance of this line and the placement of this line allows you to place all other vector points on the grid with extreme precision, down to the foot. Google Earth is pretty much required to dial all of this in correctly. It’s a brilliant puzzle with an elegant solution that weaves all of Forrest’s life events into a grid system that paints the picture of a “blaze” constellation to reveal the location of the treasure chest.
The Rest of the Clues
So now you know how to construct the grid, and where the two corners of the grid are placed in Yellowstone. Now we get to the poem and all of the other clues.
Consider a crossword puzzle. Actually, let’s get one thing out of the way – Forrest’s puzzle has nothing to do with crossword puzzles, or an assemblage of words that resembles an acrostic or any sort of constructed crossword-type of puzzle like many people have conjured up. Consider a crossword puzzle for this basic construct: (1) read a clue, (2) answer the clue, (3) write the answer in the appropriate part of the puzzle grid. Each clue in a crossword puzzle has a single specific answer, and you assemble the answers to form the entire puzzle grid.
The remainder of the clues in the poem refer to events in Forrest’s life or other elements of the Book that have significance in his life. Early in the chase, Forrest instructed searchers to “solve the clues.” Each of the remaining seven clues in the Poem has a discrete and specific answer. Forrest said in an interview: “Read the poem 6, 8, 10 times. Study every line. Every word. Then after you do that, read the book slowly with the idea of looking for clues or hints that are in the book that will help you follow the clues. You can find the chest with just the clues. There are hints in the book that will help you with the clues.”
The remaining seven clues in the poem are clever references to certain aspects of Forrest’s life as told in the stories in the Book. If these were crossword puzzle clues, they would be considered 4-star extremely difficult clues. This is the part where you need to use your imagination, almost think like a child as Forrest instructed.
I am not going to give you all of the answers to these clues, only a few. It will be up to you to discover the answers to all the clues, identify the correct dates that correspond to the answers throughout the Book, and use the dates to plot the remaining vector points on the grid. If you do it correctly, you will construct the “blaze” (a metaphorical constellation of stars on the grid) which reveals the location of the treasure chest. If anyone gets it right, I will confirm in a follow up to this article. Forrest’s wedding day was a very important day in his life.
Some of the clue pairings, answers and dates to plot on the grid:
From there it’s no place for the meek (Looking for Lewis & Clark – bravery in the mountains – Sept 20, 1946); The end is ever drawing nigh (Flywater – rumination of the afterlife – July 23, 1942)
There’ll be no paddle up your creek (Surviving Myself – June did not get spanked – April 15, 1938); Just heavy load and water high (The Long Ride Home – Skippy’s scuba diving death – May 23, 1943)
But tarry scant (My War for Me – waterfall visit, do not tarry, get back in the helicopter – Dec 27, 1952); With marvel gaze (Picture of Peggy at Ft Clark inside front cover – Oct 18, 1957)
All the Other Things that Forrest Said
Forrest did, in fact, provide plenty of hints along the way. Forrest’s suggestion to “look at the big picture” was a reference to the actual big picture of Peggy standing near the plane inside the cover of the Book. Forrest’s Scrapbook posts are a not-so-hidden call to look at the scrapbook inside the front cover of the Book. The three pictures on the cover of the Book signify the triangulation associated with plotting vector points on the grid. Forrest’s poker story and holding 777 in Scrapbook 224 was likewise a call to the triangulation of plotting vector points on the grid.
When Forrest spoke of drinking hot chocolate by the fireplace, this was a direct call out to the first two clues – “Father on the Banco” by the fireplace as the first clue and the Chocolate Pots as a reference to the second clue. The discussion of brown gravy kettles and brown stains on his pants in the Book likewise suggest the location of the second clue. The Chocolate Pots have a distinctive smell, also hinted in several writings. All the references to pie (pi) in the stories direct you to the circular postmarks with the dates. The double omegas is a call to the 0,0 point of the grid, where warm waters halt.
There are lots of others, and you will probably now recognize and understand many of them. However, not everything that Forrest said was a clue. Deep and mystical meanings have been ascribed to many of his statements, but they were mostly off the mark.
How to Get There
You can walk to the hiding place from the Terrace Spring parking lot in Yellowstone. Its interesting that Forrest managed to never mention anything geographically close to the hiding place. There is some art in the Book that looks much like the geographic feature associated with the hiding place. Forrest as a boy in the cemetery and as a man in the deforested woods is looking right up to where the treasure is hidden. Once you know the hiding place, you will understand the significant of this art. The view from the hiding place is truly amazing.
Forrest was asked in a relatively recent interview whether the chest was hidden in a remote location. He paused and thought long and hard about the answer. This is because the hiding spot is both very remote yet very close to where people go in the park. The precise location is not where anyone would ever go hiking. I can find absolutely no references on the internet of anyone ever hiking near the hiding spot, either in connection with the treasure hunt or for general hiking in the park. At the same time, the location is relatively near where people drive. Thousands of park visitors go right by the hiding spot each year. If you drive from the Madison Campgrounds to the Gibbon Falls, you go right by it. In fact, you would be about 500 feet from the hiding place. But you have to look up.

Continue to hold. You can hold, own, transfer or invest in foreign currency, foreign security or any immovable property situated outside India if such assets were acquired, held or owned by you when you were a non-resident or was inherited from a non-resident person.
Pro-tip: Be mindful of income tax regulations that determine scope of total income. You want to minimize tax paid in India on overseas assets and avoid double taxation. Plan your investments and date of return in the most tax efficient manner.
Indian Assets
Pro-tip: Note that while NRE account and FCNR account were tax exempt while you were NRIs, they become taxable when you become Resident in India (even if you forget to re-designate them for whatever reason).
Authorities/ Services to inform about return to India?
No requirement to inform Government or RBI. Returning Indian must inform the following:
Tax Implications
To maximize your NRI status, what date should you return to India?
It may not always be possible to plan your return to India. But for those with such flexibility, try to come back on or after February 1 (or February 2 in case of a leap year) of a FY in order to ensure NR status in the year of return.

2020.09.04 20:29 sandookh Flying to India from Dubai

I flew to Bombay from Dubai earlier today. I couldn’t find the process in one place so listing it below since a lot of you are from Bombay/India generally. A lot of this is specific to the home quarantine category, there are emergencies under which you can fly without doing a lot of this:
Indian embassy: you’ll need to file a reason to go back with them, but I think it’s a tickbox.
Unless you want to quarantine in a hotel, you’ll need to get a negative PCR test result. Lots of threads describing this and listing where it can be done in Dubai. Take a print of the test results (you’ll need a copy).
Tickets aren’t expensive rn so get a negative result in hand and then book for the following day or two. I didn’t book a return since everything is super tentative. Test results are valid if done upto 96 hours before departure.
Post booking, use the “Air Suvidha” service of the New Delhi airport to self declare health status and ask for an exemption from institutional quarantine by uploading your covid test results. This is to be used no matter where you fly in India.
The process requires 72 hours as per the website but both approvals were received within 30 minutes. The first is an instant central level approval while the second depends on your state government. Print both.
You’ll need the Aarogya Setu app installed and set up on your phone (yuck): yes they’ll check this including configuration.
Check with your airline for the terminal, they aren’t always flying thru their usual terminals
Most airlines are running a flight or two a day. Things are a bit up and down but generally everyone is doing their best given the circumstances, try and be nice to airline staff!
You’ll have to wear a mask throughout the flight, other PPE appears optional. Not everyone wears masks properly. No food served during so carry some entertainment to while the time.
There’s a landing form that’s required if you haven’t filled the air suvidha one above
Not a very organised process, expect 3 hours from tarmac to taxi file if multiple flights land around yours. The processes themselves aren’t worth getting into (they’re mostly old school idiotic). Play calming music and breathe deep.
A lot of people flying for personal emergencies, due to job loss, deaths in the family and so on. People are upset and the paperwork and queues add up.
The different agencies involved don’t make the process any easier, nor do supposedly educated people maintain distance (any distance is used to cut queues).
The richer people are the more entitled they are, they are constantly lecturing poor staff just doing their jobs (something they’d never dare to do in the west or Dubai)
14 day home quarantine is compulsory (they stamp your hand with ink that washes off with sanitiser). They do not allow you to fly back in less than 14 days without approval etc but I really doubt how anyone is checking all this
What is normally a 6 hour journey door to door took over 12 hours today (including 2 hour flight delays). A lot of fights, shouting and crowding. Avoid flying unless necessary, but if you must, do it on a weekday.
You’ll need permission from the GDRFA to return to Dubai and something else for other Emirates. I’ve heard this process is also a quick one but I’m unsure what the criteria is. You’ll need a negative PCR test from a centre listed on their website.
Pro Tip: Check the Emirates airline website for upto date information on travel during covid. They’re the most upto date for each destination.

2020.09.03 17:04 tanejarohan Passed the Goethe A1 exam. Learning resources and tips. AMA.

Part Score (Actual score * 1.66 as per Goethe's grading rules) Actual Score
Hören 23.24 out of 25 points 14/15
Lesen 21.58 out of 25 points 13/15
Schreiben 24.90 out of 25 points 15/15
Sprechen 19.92 out of 25 points 12/15
Overall Score 90.00 out of 100 points 54/60
Grade sehr gut
Some background:
Over the course of 2 years, I did the following (mostly in the past 6 months):
Last week preparation:
Didn't do enough:
Schreiben: Never really practiced it except for writing 1-2 paragraphs that I got corrected from a friend. Got some super useful tips though. Such as:
  1. Remember to capitalise the first letter of nouns. Very important for A1 even if you get something grammatically wrong.
  2. Get your salutations right. (Liebe/r, Sehr geehrte/r, Liebe Grüße, Mit freundlichen Grüßen) [Bonus hack tip: You'll surely find one of these in the "Lesen" section of your exam, just in case you go totally blank.]
Watching German shows on Netflix: Tried with Dark (Too complicated for me) and Dogs of Berlin (This was one year ago so I quickly switched to English when I realised I was understanding nothing). But I guess sitting through these without even understanding anything and then re-watching them to see how much you understand the next time is how it should be done. Maybe I'm just not patient enough to do that.
Wanted to do but couldn't do it in time:

Other tips:
- Get the Tandem app. I only learned about it 2 days ago. Mostly using it for speaking practice now by communicating via voice notes. Quite handy for chatting as well. Just remember to help more than what you get in return.
- You should be able to ace the 1st part of the "sprechen" test even in your sleep. The first part is always always always about introducing yourself with 7 basic requirements: Name, age, country of origin, current place of residence, current job, hobbies and languages spoken. Plus, they'll ask you to spell your name and recite your phone number. Getting your ABCs and 123s right may seem easy but record yourself answering all of these and ask a German friend to correct your pronunciation since you may not notice it yourself. I was asked to spell out my area of residence instead of my last name: I live in Mitte so they laughed it off and asked me to spell out my street name instead. So be prepared to spell out any of your basic details.
- I messed up the third part of my "sprechen" exam by not understanding what "Bitten" means. "Bitten" on Google Translate says "ask / request". But what they really want in the exam is "request" and not just any form of "ask". I asked general questions instead of "May I..." or "Can you please..." ones. I learned about this after my speaking test from a fellow test taker in my "sprechen" group. That's where I suppose I lost the 1 or 2 of the 3 points deducted. Lost the other 1-2 points probably because I have no practice of including Akkusativ/Dativ cases in a sentence when speaking.
- Fitting the message/email in (approximately) 30 words is tough. But a few friends suggested to stick to it and I even saw on one of the sample papers that points are deducted for not respecting the word limit. I wrote 36.
- Do not write the message/email on the answer sheet directly since you are very likely to make spelling mistakes / capitalisation / grammar mistakes in the first attempt. Make use of the question booklet and keep improving it there itself.
- You have no control over the duration of the Hören part since it does take 20 minutes to listen to 15 audio questions + 1 sample question. But after that you'll have 40 minutes for Lesen and Schreiben and most likely you'll have a bigger part of these 40 for Schreiben since 1 question per minute in Lesen can be done comfortably. Plan accordingly.
- The speaking part of the test takes place after a break. There were 14 test takers in my batch and I was the last one so my speaking test was scheduled 2 hours after the Hören-Lesen-Schreiben part. You'll already know this duration beforehand when you receive details about your exam a week or so before the exam date via email.
- Like me, if you have no urgent requirement to learn the language, go ahead and book a test date. Maybe that'll kick in some urgency.
- As you may have noticed by now, I was/am inclined towards video/audio tutorials more than putting in the effort myself to practice grammawriting/speaking which would definitely start being problematic with further levels. So please adapt your learning according to what suits you best and not trust this post blindly.
If there's something that I didn't answer, please feel free to ask in the comments below and I'll try my best to answer them ASAP.
Good luck!

2020.08.31 17:33 ObiEff Koshari is an Egyptian dish that exemplifies the words "Carb loaded". It's made of Rice, Pasta, Lentils and Chickpeas; and despite being sacrilegious it's absolutely delicious

Every week I cook and document a new Middle Eastern dish, this week I tackled Koshari. An Egyptian Street food with Indian origins that will fulfill your deepest carby desires. If you ask anyone who's been to Egypt about the dishes they remember most fondly, you'll likely hear Koshari mentioned more than once. It's a unique dish that really encompasses the words comfort food. Not only is Kushari one of the most popular and cheapest street foods in Egypt, but it's also the National Dish of the country.

What is Koshari

Put simply, Koshari is carbs on carbs on carbs. It's made from a mixture of rice, pasta and lentils which is served with three different sauces. It's then topped with spiced chickpeas and crispy fried onions for some textural variation. Now if it sounds like sacrilege to mix rice and pasta, well it probably is, but it's delicious sacrilege and you should try it at least once. Perfectly cooked soft rice is mixed with al dente pasta and fried vermicelli, then lightly spiced brown lentils are added. All together you get a great contrast of textures and flavors. The three sauces that are added are a garlic tomato sauce, a spicy tomato sauce (Shatta), and a spiced garlic and vinegar sauce (Dakka). By controlling the amounts of each sauce you can customize the flavors of the dish to your liking, I'm a big fan of extra Shatta and extra Dakka which makes a delicious bowl of Koshari which is quite spicy and tangy. Finally there's the toppings and they are actually a significant part of the dishes flavor. The lentils are cooked with Cumin and some aromatics to give them a lightly spiced flavor, and the onions are also spiced with Cumin before being fried to a perfect crisp. I'm not a massive fans of chickpeas except when turned into Hummus, but I have got to say these chickpeas are bloody delicious and could be eaten just on their own with some rice, and the crispy onions well apart from having great texture, they end up caramelizing really well when frying, and so they have a sweet cumin flavor which is to die for.
The popularity of Koshari in Egypt is partly due to it's wide availability and cheap price, a huge bowl of Koshari (enough for 2-3 people) costs 15 Egyptian Pounds ($0.80) at some of the bigger chains and historically it used to cost as little as ($0.20). It also has the benefit of primarily being made from dried pulses which helps keep the price down and when you can make something so delicious with just a few ingredients, well it's no surprise it became the Egyptian national dish. Koshari is also commonly made at home, busy parents can make a large batch of it and reheat it throughout the week. I'm a big fan of homemade koshari because I generally feel most of the Koshari chains in Cairo lack the oomph factor, and I find that layering the flavors in the dish really helps them pop. I've stolen this recipe from my mother in law as it's the best I've ever tasted and hopefully when you make it you'll understand why.

The history of Koshari is actually very interesting, you see Koshari is thought to have evolved from the south asian dish Khichiri or Khichdi, which is a dish made from lentils and rice cooked together. Khichidi has been around for thousands of years, and the Wikipedia entry mentions "The Greek king Seleucus during his campaign in India (305-303 BC), mentioned that rice with pulses is very popular among people of the Indian subcontinent.". It also states that Ibn Battuta encountered the dish during his time in India. So how did Khichidi get to Egypt? Well there's two possible theories, firstly the silk road introduced all manner of food and spices from Asia to the Middle East. There's a lot of shared dishes and cooking techniques between the two cultures, so it's not unlikely that the dish may have first come to Egypt via the silk road. The second possible explanation is that it was brought to Egypt by the British when they took control of the country in the early 1900s. The British at the time also controlled India and their troops came from all over the empire, so it's likely that the dish may have spread that way.
Back in the 1900s and until around 1970, there were many different nationalities living in Egypt, it was a popular place for expatriates. Cairo had enclaves of Greeks, Italians, French, Turkish, Syrian and of course British nationals. The story goes that when Khichidi reached italian households, they ended up adding pasta to the Khichidi and thus the Koshari base was born. The sauces were likely taken from other Egyptian dishes and added to Koshari, most Egyptian vegetable dishes have a tomato sauce similar to the koshari one, and the garlic and vinegar mixture is close to the sauce added to Egyptian Fattah.

Flavor Profile

Brown lentils are quite different from other lentils as they tend to have a more earthy and Umami flavor, they lend a great depth of flavor to the koshari base, which without the lentils wouldn't really taste of much. The technique I use to cook the base reuses the oil that the onions are fried in, so you also get a layered flavor of onion and cumin from the rice. When cooking the base I also use the liquid that the lentils were boiled in, instead of plain water, and that helps the lentil flavor really soak into the rice.
Combining the sauces is very much a matter of personal preference, so assuming you are making a dish with a small amount of chili and a couple of tablespoons of the other sauces, then here's what you would taste. The tomato sauce has a good amount of garlic and vinegar in it, when mixed with the Koshari Base it helps make the whole dish quite a bit brighter tasting. The Dakka (garlic and vinegar sauce) adds a further tangy and acidic element, this time it's a bit of a powerfull kick, but it balances out really well with the earthiness of the lentils. The chili sauce is used to add heat and spice, and it's not uncommon for people to go without it. I think it really helps round out the flavors. Finally the toppings, and I think they just add a bit more of a complex spiced flavor and some much needed sweetness to the whole dish.

Spiced Chickpeas

Brown Lentils

Fried Onions

Tomato Sauce

Shatta (chili) Sauce

Dakka (Garlic Vinegar) Sauce

Koshari Base

This will make enough koshari to feed 6 really hungry people . It'll probably take you 2-4 hours to make the first time around but if you're a pro multi tasker you may be able to reduce it to an hour of active time.

To make the chickpeas

  1. Soak your dried chickpeas overnight in a large amount of room temperature water, if you're using canned chickpeas then you can skip this
  2. The next day drain your chickpeas and in a large pot boil a large amount of water (about 2 litres or quarts) and add the soaked chickpeas
  3. Add a plum tomato, the onion sliced in half and 2 cloves of garlic to the pot
  4. Add 1 Tsp Cumin, 1 Tsp Salt and 1/2 Tsp Cayenne to the pot and leave to boil for 1-2 hours
  5. The chickpeas are ready when you can squish them between your fingers. If the water evaporates then add more till they are done cooking. Drain and set aside

To make the Lentils

  1. Add 2 litres or quarts of water to a pot and boil
  2. Add 1 Tsp Salt and 1 Tsp Cumin to the water as well as your lentils
  3. Boil for 30-60 minutes until cooked through but not mushy (Try aim for an al dente texture)
  4. Strain the lentils using a colander, and keep any of the water they were boiled in for use later

To make the Tomato sauce

  1. Add the Oil to a sauce pan on medium high heat
  2. Mince the garlic cloves and fry in the pot for a few minutes until fragrant and bubbling
  3. Before the garlic browns add the White vinegar and de-glaze the pot
  4. Blend your chopped tomatoes up into a passata and add to the pot
  5. Season with salt and pepper
  6. Allow to simmer for 20-30 minutes until thickened and resembles a marinara

To make the Spicy Tomato sauce

  1. Slice your chilis into thin circles about 2mm wide
  2. Add Oil to a sauce pan on medium high heat
  3. Mince the Garlic cloves and add to the pot with the chilis. Let them fry for a few minutes until fragrant
  4. Add the white vinegar and deglaze the pot
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes, salt and pepper and simmer for 20 minutes until thick and chunky

To make the Dakkah, Garlic Vinegar sauce

  1. Mince 7 garlic cloves and add to a jug
  2. Add 1/3C White Vinegar, 1/3C water and 1/4C Lemon juice
  3. Add 2 Tsp Cumin, 1 Tsp Coriander, 1/2 Tsp Cayenne pepper and 1/2 Tsp salt and mix to combine

To make the crispy onions

  1. Slice your onions into thin strips against the grain of the onion about 2mm wide
  2. Place in a large bowl and add the Cumin, Black pepper and salt
  3. Mix thoroughly until all the onion strips have been separated from each other and let sit for 30-60 minutes to macerate
  4. Add frying oil to a large pot about 1.5cm or 1/2in deep, when hot add the onion in batches to fry (Reserve a handful of onions for later which we'll add to the base)
  5. Fry for 8-12 minutes per batch until Golden in color, remove and place on a paper towel lined tray, they will continue to darken after removing from the oil
  6. After a few minutes on the tray, move to a second tray with clean paper towels. Make sure to evenly space them and you can even dab excess oil off them so that they stay super crispy

To make the koshari base

  1. Wash your rice 3-4 times till the water runs clear and allow to dry for at least one hour
  2. Remove all of the oil except 1/4 - 1/2 a cup from the pot you fried the onions in, make sure to leave any sediment in the pot as that will add flavor to the rice
  3. Fry the handful of onions that you kept aside till lightly browned
  4. Add in the vermicelli and fry on high heat for 2-3 minutes until golden brown in color
  5. Add the dried rice to the vermicelli and fry for a few minutes
  6. Add the lentils to the rice and mix to combine
  7. Add a few large Tbsp of the tomato sauce to the pot as well as 3-4 Tbsp of Dakka to the pot then mix well
  8. Add the lentil water to the pot, and top up with water until the rice and vermicelli are just barely submerged
  9. Bring the pot to a boil and cover, once all of the water has evaporated from the base of the pot turn the heat down to low
  10. Allow to steam for 20-30 minutes until the rice is cooked through. You may have to add some extra water if it still isn't cooked after 30 minutes, and if it is a bit soggy you may want to steam for 10 minutes with the lid off
  11. Cook your pasta in heavily salted water till al dente
  12. Add the cooked pasta to the rice and vermicelli in two parts and mix well till evenly combined

To plate the Koshari

  1. Add a generous serving of the koshari base to a platter
  2. Spoon over the tomato sauce across the koshari base
  3. Add a few Tbsp of the Dakkah over the top of the tomato
  4. Sprinkle some of the cooked chickpeas over the top of the dish
  5. Add fried onions to the dish
  6. Serve the chili sauce on the side and Enjoy

Vital Fluids
There is no history of mankind, there are only many histories of all kinds of aspects of human life. —Karl Popper, philosopher of science (1902-94) THIRST is DEADLIER than hunger. Deprived of food, you might survive for a few weeks, but deprived of liquid refreshment, you would be lucky to last more than a few days. Only breathing matters more. Tens of thousands of years ago, early humans foraging in small bands had to remain near rivers, springs, and lakes to ensure an adequate supply of freshwater, since storing or carrying it was impractical. The availability of water constrained and guided humankind's progress. Drinks have continued to shape human history ever since. Only in the past ten thousand years or so have other beverages emerged to challenge the preeminence of water. These drinks do not occur naturally in any quantity but must be made deliberately. As well as offering safer alternatives to con taminated, disease-ridden water supplies in human settlements, these new beverages have taken on a variety of roles. Many of them have been used as currencies, in religious rites, as political symbols, or as sources of philosophical and artistic inspiration. Some have served to highlight the power and status of the elite, and others to subjugate or appease the downtrodden. Drinks have been used to celebrate births, commemorate deaths, and forge and strengthen social bonds; to seal business transactions and treaties; to sharpen the senses or dull the mind; to convey lifesaving medicines and deadly poisons. As the tides of history have ebbed and flowed, different drinks have come to prominence in different times, places, and cultures, from stone-age villages to ancient Greek dining rooms or Enlightenment coffeehouses. Each one became popular when it met a particular need or aligned with a historical trend; in some cases, it then went on to influence the course of history in unexpected ways. Just as archaeologists divide history into different periods based on the use of different materials—the stone age, the bronze age, the iron age, and so on—it is also possible to divide world history into periods dominated by different drinks. Six beverages in particular—beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and cola—chart the flow of world history. Three contain alcohol, and three contain caffeine, but what
they all have in common is that each one was the defining drink during a pivotal historical period, from antiquity to the present day. The event that set humankind on the path toward modernity was the adoption of farming, beginning with the domestication of cereal grains, which first took place in the Near East around ten thousand years ago and was accompanied by the appearance of a rudimentary form of beer. The first civilizations arose around five thousand years later in Mesopotamia and Egypt, two parallel cultures founded on a surplus of cereal grains produced by organized agriculture on a massive scale. This freed a small fraction of the population from the need to work in the fields and made possible the emergence of specialist priests, administrators, scribes, and craftsmen. Not only did beer nourish the inhabitants of the first cities and the authors of the first written documents, but their wages and rations were paid in bread and beer, as cereal grains were the basis of the economy. The flourishing culture that developed within the city-states of ancient Greece in the first millennium BCE spawned advances in philosophy, politics, science, and literature that still underpin modern Western thought. Wine was the lifeblood of this Mediterranean civilization, and the basis of vast seaborne trade that helped to spread Greek ideas far and wide. Politics, poetry, and philosophy were discussed at formal drinking parties, or symposia, in which the participants drank from a shared bowl of diluted wine. The spread of wine drinking continued under the Romans, the structure of whose hierarchical society was reflected in a minutely calibrated pecking order of wines and wine styles. Two of the world's major religions issued opposing verdicts on the drink: The Christian ritual of the Eucharist has wine at its center, but following the collapse of the Roman Empire and the rise of Islam, wine was banned in the very region of its birth. The rebirth of Western thought a millennium after the fall of Rome was sparked by the rediscovery of Greek and Roman knowledge, much of which had been safeguarded and extended by scholars in the Arab world. At the same time, European explorers, driven by the desire to circumvent the Arab monopoly on trade with the East, sailed west to the Americas and east to India and China. Global sea routes were established, and European nations vied with one another to carve up the globe. During this Age of Exploration a new range of beverages came to the fore, made possible by distillation, an alchemical process known in the ancient world but much improved by Arab scholars. Distilled drinks provided
alcohol in a compact, durable form ideal for sea transport. Such drinks as brandy, rum, and whiskey were used as currency to buy slaves and became particularly popular in the North American colonies, where they became so politically contentious that they played a key role in the establishment of the United States. Hard on the heels of this geographic expansion came its intellectual counterpart, as Western thinkers looked beyond long-held beliefs inherited from the Greeks and devised new scientific, political, and economic theories. The dominant drink of this Age of Reason was coffee, a mysterious and fashionable beverage introduced to Europe from the Middle East. The establishments that sprung up to serve coffee had a markedly different character from taverns that sold alcoholic drinks, and became centers of commercial, political, and intellectual exchange. Coffee promoted clarity of thought, making it the ideal drink for scientists, businessmen, and philosophers. Coffeehouse discussions led to the establishment of scientific societies, the founding of newspapers, the establishment of financial institutions, and provided fertile ground for revolutionary thought, particularly in France. In some European nations, and particularly in Britain, coffee was challenged by tea imported from China. Its popularity in Europe helped to open lucrative trade routes with the East and underpinned imperialism and industrialization on an unprecedented scale, enabling Britain to become the first global superpower. Once tea had established itself as Britain's national drink, the desire to maintain the tea supply had far-reaching effects on British foreign policy, contributing to the independence of the United States, the undermining of China's ancient civilization, and the establishment of tea production in India on an industrial scale. Although artificially carbonated beverages originated in Europe in the late eighteenth century, the soft drink came into its own with the invention of Coca- Cola one hundred years later. Originally devised as a medicinal pick-me-up by an Atlanta pharmacist, it became America's national drink, an emblem of the vibrant consumer capitalism that helped to transform the United States into a superpower. Traveling alongside American servicemen as they fought wars around the world during the twentieth century, Coca-Cola went on to become the world's most widely known and distributed product and is now an icon of the controversial march toward a single global marketplace. Drinks have had a closer connection to the flow of history than is generally acknowledged, and a greater influence on its course. Understanding the
ramifications of who drank what, and why, and where they got it from, requires the traversal of many disparate and otherwise unrelated fields: the histories of agricul ture, philosophy, religion, medicine, technology, and commerce. The six beverages highlighted in this book demonstrate the complex interplay of different civilizations and the interconnectedness of world cultures. They survive in our homes today as living reminders of bygone eras, fluid testaments to the forces that shaped the modern world. Uncover their origins, and you may never look at your favorite drink in quite the same way again.
Chapter 1
A Stone-Age Brew
Fermentation and civilization are inseparable. —John Ciardi, American poet (1916-86) A Pint of Prehistory THE HUMANS WHO migrated out of Africa starting around 50,000 years ago traveled in small nomadic bands, perhaps thirty strong, and lived in caves, huts, or skin tents. They hunted game, caught fish and shellfish, and gathered edible plants, moving from one temporary camp to another to exploit seasonal food supplies. Their tools included bows and arrows, fishhooks, and needles. But then, starting around 12,000 years ago, a remarkable shift occurred. Humans in the Near East abandoned the old hunter-gatherer lifestyle of the Paleolithic period (old stone age) and began to take up farming instead, settling down in villages which eventually grew to become the world's first cities. They also developed many new technologies, including pottery, wheeled vehicles, and writing. Ever since the emergence of "anatomically modern" humans, or Homo sapiens sapiens, in Africa around 150,000 years ago, water had been humankind's basic drink. A fluid of primordial importance, it makes up two-thirds of the human body, and no life on Earth can exist without it. But with the switch from the hunter-gatherer lifestyle to a more settled way of life, humans came to rely on a new beverage derived from barley and wheat, the cereal grains that were the first plants to be deliberately cultivated. This drink became central to social, religious, and economic life and was the staple beverage of the earliest civilizations. It was the drink that first helped humanity along the path to the modern world: beer. Exactly when the first beer was brewed is not known. There was almost certainly no beer before 10,000 BCE, but it was widespread in the Near East by 4000 BCE, when it appears in a pictogram from Mesopotamia, a region that corresponds to modern-day Iraq, depicting two figures drinking beer through reed straws from a large pottery jar. (Ancient beer had grains, chaff, and other
debris floating on its surface, so a straw was necessary to avoid swallowing them.) Since the first examples of writing date from around 3400 BCE, the earliest written documents can shed no direct light on beer's origins. What is clear, however, is that the rise of beer was closely associated with the domestication of the cereal grains from which it is made and the adoption of farming. It came into existence during a turbulent period in human history that witnessed the switch from a nomadic to a settled lifestyle, followed by a sudden increase in social complexity manifested most strikingly in the emergence of cities. Beer is a liquid relic from human prehistory, and its origins are closely intertwined with the origins of civilization itself. A pictogram from a seal found at Tepe Gawra in Mesopotamia dating from around 4000 BCE. It shows two figures drinking beer through straws from a large pottery jar. The Discovery of Beer Beer was not invented but discovered. Its discovery was inevitable once the gathering of wild grains became widespread after the end of the last ice age, around 10,000 BCE, in a region known as the Fertile Crescent. This area stretches from modern-day Egypt, up the Mediterranean coast to the southeast
corner of Turkey, and then down again to the border between Iraq and Iran. It is so named because of a happy accident of geography. When the ice age ended, the uplands of the region provided an ideal environment for wild sheep, goats, cattle, and pigs—and, in some areas, for dense stands of wild wheat and barley. This meant the Fertile Crescent provided unusually rich pickings for roving bands of human hunter-gatherers. They not only hunted animals and gathered edible plants but collected the abundant cereal grains growing wild in the region. The Fertile Crescent, a region of the Near East where humans first took up farming and established large-scale settlements (shown here as black dots) Such grains provided an unexciting but reliable source of food. Although unsuitable for consumption when raw, they can be made edible by roughly pounding or crushing them and then soaking them in water. Initially, they were probably just mixed into soup. A variety of ingredients such as fish, nuts, and berries would have been mixed with water in a plastered or bitumen-lined basket. Stones, heated in a fire, were then dropped in, using a forked stick. Grains contain tiny granules of starch, and when placed in hot water they absorb moisture and then burst, releasing the starch into the soup and thickening it considerably. Cereal grains, it was soon discovered, had another unusual property: Unlike other foodstuffs, they could be stored for consumption months or even years later, if kept dry and safe. When no other foodstuffs were available to make
soup, they could be used on their own to make either a thick porridge or a thin broth or gruel. This discovery led to the development of tools and techniques to collect, process, and store grain. It involved quite a lot of effort but provided a way to guard against the possibility of future food shortages. Throughout the Fertile Crescent there is archaeological evidence from around 10,000 BCE of flint-bladed sickles for harvesting cereal grains, woven baskets for carrying them, stone hearths for drying them, underground pits for storing them, and grindstones for processing them. Although hunter-gatherers had previously led semisettled rather than entirely nomadic lives, moving between a number of temporary or seasonal shelters, the ability to store cereal grains began to encourage people to stay in one place. An experiment carried out in the 1960s shows why. An archaeologist used a flint- bladed sickle to see how efficiently a prehistoric family could have harvested wild grains, which still grow in some parts of Turkey. In one hour he gathered more than two pounds of grain, which suggested that a family that worked eight- hour days for three weeks would have been able to gather enough to provide each family member with a pound of grain a day for a year. But this would have meant staying near the stands of wild cereals to ensure the family did not miss the most suitable time to harvest them. And having gathered a large quantity of grain, they would be reluctant to leave it unguarded. The result was the first permanent settlements, such as those established on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean from around 10,000 BCE. They consisted of simple, round huts with roofs supported by wooden posts and floors sunk up to a yard into the ground. These huts usually had a hearth and a floor paved with stones and were four or five yards in diameter. A typical village consisted of around fifty huts, supporting a community of two hundred or three hundred people. Although the residents of such villages continued to hunt wild animals such as gazelles, deer, and boar, skeletal evidence suggests that they subsisted on a mainly plant-based diet of acorns, lentils, chickpeas, and cereals, which at this stage were still gathered in the wild, rather than cultivated deliberately. Cereal grains, which started off as relatively unimportant foodstuffs, took on greater significance following the discovery that they had two more unusual properties. The first was that grain soaked in water, so that it starts to sprout, tastes sweet. It was difficult to make storage pits perfectly watertight, so this property would have become apparent as soon as humans first began to store grain. The cause of this sweetness is now understood: Moistened grain produces
diastase enzymes, which convert starch within the grain into maltose sugar, or malt. (This process occurs in all cereal grains, but barley produces by far the most diastase enzymes and hence the most maltose sugar.) At a time when few other sources of sugar were available, the sweetness of this "malted" grain would have been highly valued, prompting the development of deliberate malting techniques, in which the grain was first soaked and then dried. The second discovery was even more momentous. Gruel that was left sitting around for a couple of days underwent a mysterious transformation, particularly if it had been made with malted grain: It became slightly fizzy and pleasantly intoxicating, as the action of wild yeasts from the air fermented the sugar in the gruel into alcohol. The gruel, in short, turned into beer. Even so, beer was not necessarily the first form of alcohol to pass human lips. At the time of beer's discovery, alcohol from the accidental fermentation of fruit juice (to make wine) or water and honey (to make mead) would have occurred naturally in small quantities as people tried to store fruit or honey. But fruit is seasonal and perishes easily, wild honey was only available in limited quantities, and neither wine nor mead could be stored for very long without pottery, which did not emerge until around 6000 BCE. Beer, on the other hand, could be made from cereal crops, which were abundant and could be easily stored, allowing beer to be made reliably, and in quantity, when needed. Long before pottery was available, it could have been brewed in pitch-lined baskets, leather bags or animal stomachs, hollowed-out trees, large shells, or stone vessels. Shells were used for cooking as recently as the nineteenth century in the Amazon basin, and Sahti, a traditional beer made in Finland, is still brewed in hollowed-out trees today. Once the crucial discovery of beer had been made, its quality was improved through trial and error. The more malted grain there is in the original gruel, for example, and the longer it is left to ferment, the stronger the beer. More malt means more sugar, and a longer fermentation means more of the sugar is turned into alcohol. Thoroughly cooking the gruel also contributes to the beer's strength. The malting process converts only around 15 percent of the starch found in barley grains into sugar, but when malted barley is mixed with water and brought to the boil, other starch-converting enzymes, which become active at higher temperatures, turn more of the starch into sugar, so there is more sugar for the yeast to transform into alcohol. Ancient brewers also noticed that using the same container repeatedly for
brewing produced more reliable results. Later historical records from Egypt and Mesopotamia show that brewers always carried their own "mash tubs" around with them, and one Mesopotamian myth refers to "containers which make the beer good." Repeated use of the same mash tub promoted successful fermentation because yeast cultures took up residence in the container's cracks and crevices, so that there was no need to rely on the more capricious wild yeast. Finally, adding berries, honey, spices, herbs, and other flavorings to the gruel altered the taste of the resulting beer in various ways. Over the next few thousand years, people discovered how to make a variety of beers of different strengths and flavors for different occasions. Later Egyptian records mention at least seventeen kinds of beer, some of them referred to in poetic terms that sound, to modern ears, almost like advertising slogans: Different beers were known as "the beautiful and good," "the heavenly," "the joy-bringer," "the addition to the meal," "the plentiful," "the fermented." Beers used in religious ceremonies also had special names. Similarly, early written references to beer from Mesopotamia, in the third millennium BCE, list over twenty different kinds, including fresh beer, dark beer, fresh-dark beer, strong beer, red-brown beer, light beer, and pressed beer. Red-brown beer was a dark beer made using extra malt, while pressed beer was a weaker, more watery brew that contained less grain. Mesopotamian brewers could also control the taste and color of their beer by adding different amounts of bappir, or beer- bread. To make bappir, sprouted barley was shaped into lumps, like small loaves, which were baked twice to produce a dark-brown, crunchy, unleavened bread that could be stored for years before being crumbled into the brewer's vat. Records indicate that bappir was kept in government storehouses and was only eaten during food shortages; it was not so much a foodstuff as a convenient way to store the raw material for making beer.. The Mesopotamian use of bread in brewing has led to much debate among archaeologists, some of whom have suggested that bread must therefore be an offshoot of beer making, while others have argued that bread came first and was subsequently used as an ingredient in beer. It seems most likely, however, that both bread and beer were derived from gruel. A thick gruel could be baked in the sun or on a hot stone to make flatbread; a thin gruel could be left to ferment into beer. The two were different sides of the same coin: Bread was solid beer, and beer was liquid bread.
Under the Influence of Beer? Since writing had not been invented at the time, there are no written records to attest to the social and ritual importance of beer in the Fertile Crescent during the new stone age, or Neolithic period, between 9000 BCE and 4000 BCE. But much can be inferred from later records of the way beer was used by the first literate civilizations, the Sumerians of Mesojpotamia and the ancient Egyptians. Indeed, so enduring are the cultural traditions associated with beer that some of them survive to this day. From the start, it seems that beer had an important function as a social drink. Sumerian depictions of beer from the third millennium BCE generally show two people drinking through straws from a shared vessel. By the Sumerian period, however, it was possible to filter the grains, chaff, and other debris from beer, and the advent of pottery meant it could just as easily have been served in individual cups. That beer drinkers are, nonetheless, so widely depicted using straws suggests that it was a ritual that persisted even when straws were no longer necessary. The most likely explanation for this preference is that, unlike food, beverages can genuinely be shared. When several people drink beer from the same vessel, they are all consuming the same liquid; when cutting up a piece of meat, in contrast, some parts are usually deemed to be more desirable than others. As a result, sharing a drink with someone is a universal symbol of hospitality and friendship. It signals that the person offering the drink can be trusted, by demonstrating that it is not poisoned or otherwise unsuitable for consumption. The earliest beer, brewed in a primitive vessel in an era that predated the use of individual cups, would have to have been shared. Although it is no longer customary to offer visitors a straw through which to drink from a communal vat of beer, today tea or coffee may be offered from a shared pot, or a glass of wine or spirits from a shared bottle. And when drinking alcohol in a social setting, the clinking of glasses symbolically reunites the glasses into a single vessel of shared liquid. These are traditions with very ancient origins. Just as ancient is the notion that drinks, and alcoholic drinks in particular, have supernatural properties. To Neolithic drinkers, beer's ability to intoxicate and induce a state of altered consciousness seemed magical. So, too, did the mysterious process of fermentation, which transformed ordinary gruel into beer. The obvious conclusion was that beer was a gift from the gods; accordingly,
many cultures have myths that explain how the gods invented beer and then showed humankind how to make it. The Egyptians, for example, believed that beer was accidentally discovered by Osiris, the god of agriculture and king of the afterlife. One day he prepared a mixture of water and sprouted grain, but forgot about it and left it in the sun. He later returned to find the gruel had fermented, decided to drink it, and was so pleased with the result that he passed his knowledge on to humankind. (This tale seems to tally closely with the way beer was probably discovered in the stone age.) Other beer-drinking cultures tell similar stories. Since beer was a gift from the gods, it was also the logical thing to present as a religious offering. Beer was certainly used in religious ceremonies, agricultural fertility rites, and funerals by the Sumerians and the Egyptians, so it seems likely that its religious use goes back farther still. Indeed, the religious significance of beer seems to be common to every beer-drinking culture, whether in the Americas, Africa, or Eurasia. The Incas offered their beer, called chicha, to the rising sun in a golden cup, and poured it on the ground or spat out their first mouthful as an offering to the gods of the Earth; the Aztecs offered their beer, called pulque, to Mayahuel, the goddess of fertility. In China, beers made from millet and rice were used in funerals and other ceremonies. The practice of raising a glass to wish someone good health, a happy marriage, or a safe passage into the afterlife, or to celebrate the successful completion of a project, is the modern echo of the ancient idea that alcohol has the power to invoke supernatural forces. Beer and Farming, the Seeds of Modernity Some anthropologists have even suggested that beer might have played a central role in the adoption of agriculture, one of the turning points of human history. Farming paved the way for the emergence of civilization by creating food surpluses, freeing some members of society from the need to produce food and enabling them to specialize in particular activities and crafts, and so setting humanity on the path to the modern world. This happened first in the Fertile Crescent, starting around 9000 BCE, as people began cultivating barley and wheat deliberately, rather than simply gathering wild grains for consumption and storage. Of course, the switch from hunting and gathering to farming was a gradual
transition over a few thousand years, as deliberately cultivated crops played an increasingly significant dietary role. Yet in the grand scheme of human history, it happened in an eyeblink. Humans had been hunter-gatherers ever since humankind diverged from the apes, around seven million years earlier; then they suddenly took up farming. Exactly why the switch to farming occurred, and occurred when it did, is still hotly debated, and there are dozens of theories. Perhaps the amount of food available to hunter-gatherers in the Fertile Crescent diminished, for example, either because of climatic changes, or because some species died out or were hunted to extinction. Another possibility is that a more sedentary (but still hunter-gatherer) lifestyle increased human fertility, allowing the population to grow and creating demand for new sources of food. Or perhaps once beer had been discovered, and its consumption had become socially and ritually important, there was a greater desire to ensure the availability of grain by deliberate farming, rather than relying on wild grains. Farming was, according to this view, adopted partly in order to maintain the supply of beer. Tempting though it is to attribute the adoption of agriculture entirely to beer, it seems most likely that beer drinking was just one of many factors that helped to tip the balance away from hunting and gathering and toward farming and a sedentary lifestyle based on small settlements. Once this transition had begun, a ratchet effect took hold: The more farming was relied on as a means of food production by a particular community, and the more its population grew, the harder it was to go back to the old nomadic lifestyle based on hunting and gathering. Beer drinking would also have assisted the transition to farming in a more subtle way. Because long-term storage of beer was difficult, and complete fermentation takes up to a week, most beer would have been drunk much sooner, while still fermenting. Such a beer would have had a relatively low alcohol content by modern standards but would have been rich in suspended yeast, which dramatically improved its protein and vitamin content. The high level of vitamin B, in particular, would have compensated for the decline in the consumption of meat, the usual source of that vitamin, as hunting gave way to farming. Furthermore, since it was made using boiled water, beer was safer to drink than water, which quickly becomes contaminated with human waste in even the smallest settlements. Although the link between contaminated water and ill health was not understood until modern times, humans quickly learned to be wary of
unfamiliar water supplies, and to drink where possible from clear-running streams away from human settlements. (Hunter-gatherers did not have to worry about contaminated water supplies, since they lived in small, mobile bands and left their human waste behind when they moved on.) In other words, beer helped to make up for the decline in food quality as people took up farming, provided a safe form of liquid nourishment, and gave groups of beer-drinking farmers a comparative nutritional advantage over non-beer drinkers. Farming spread throughout the Fertile Crescent between 7000 BCE and 5000 BCE, as an increasing number of plants and animals (starting with sheep and goats) were domesticated, and new irrigation techniques made farming possible on the hot, dry lowlands of Mesopotamia and in the Nile Valley of Egypt. A typical farming village of the period consisted of huts built from clay and reed mats, and perhaps some rather grander houses built of sun-dried mud bricks. Beyond the village would have been fields where cereals, dates, and other crops were cultivated, with a few sheep and oxen tethered or penned nearby. Wild fowl, fish, and game, when available, supplemented the villagers' diet. It was a very different lifestyle from the hunting and gathering of just a few thousand years earlier. And the transition toward an even more complex society had begun. Settlements from this period often had a storehouse where valuable items were kept, including sacred objects and stores of surplus food. These storehouses were definitely communal, since they were far larger than would have been needed by any single family. Keeping surplus food in the storehouse was one way to ward off future food shortages; ritual and religious activity, in which the gods were called upon to ensure a good harvest, was another. As these two activities became intertwined, deposits of surplus food came to be seen as offerings to the gods, and the storehouses became temples. To ensure all villagers were pulling their weight, contributions to the common storehouse were recorded using small clay tokens, found throughout the Fertile Crescent from as early as 8000 BCE. Such contributions were justified as religious offerings by administrator-priests who lived off the surplus food and directed communal activities, such as the construction of buildings and the maintenance of irrigation systems. Thus were sown the seeds of accountancy, writing, and bureaucracy. The idea that beer provided some of the impetus for this dramatic shift in the nature of human activity, after millions of years of hunting and gathering, remains controversial. But the best evidence for the importance of beer in prehistoric
times is its extraordinary significance to the people of the first great civilizations. For although the origins of this ancient drink inevitably remain shrouded in mystery and conjecture, there is no question that the daily lives of Egyptians and Mesopotamians, young and old, rich and poor, were steeped in beer.
